CHAMBERS SCOOPS HIS OWN AWARD
First Season Award Ceremony Review.
The evening of the last game of the season and the Chairman and manager make their awards. The Ball room at the Winter
Gardens was booked from the start of the season, a big party planned, beer bought tables arranged, press, fans and players
invited. Introduced by the Compare the manager rises to give a speech and announce the awards. That was in Grimsby though,
for the Heroes we had a much smaller affair. Invited over the e-mail, (which I received after the event!) only a hand full of
people turned up. Against the back drop of the Derwent bar quiz Lucy, sitting, announced the winners of a rather lengthy, and
much sarcastic (may she never complain about sarcastic comments ever again) list of awards. 26
awards were made in total, a full list may well be made public over the web site at a later stage but here I offer a brief review of the awards.
Some of these awards are quite fair, Pete was rewarded for having the longest socks, Tom was called the find of the season
and I quite agree, having been on the receiving end, that Mark was the "most likely to give the fans a sore throat by making
them shout 'Go On, MARK! SHOOT!!' a lot".
Strongest in the Challenge, contentiously went to Mark, presumably the manager was trying to sarcastically make a point,
though the Brighton Bombshell has admonished people in the past for doing the same.
I like the category, presumably created for and won by Aeddan, "Best goal line 'couldn't give a fuck, I'm putting my gloves on'
clearance".
Surprisingly James won two awards, though one may suspect they were sympathy votes. He was most likely not to come back
and defend and also the most pointless buy of the season.
The players voted Mr Chambers as the player of the season, and fairly so. His improvement in goal was the key to not going
down by 10 goals in every match. Though he could improve more so he doesn't win the other category for making life difficult
for himself..
Now we come to the biggest award, Player of the Season. These awards were created, arranged even partly sponsored by,
the Chairman Richard Chambers. He didn't choose the winners but did create a lot of categories, including player of the
season. The E-mail invite said that it was the fans that chose the winner of this one, but I don't recall a vote on the issue.
This prize was awarded to Richard Chambers, the chairman himself, and as with the players award I can see why. If it were
down to me though I may not have selected him.
FANZINE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Here it is, my choice, using my own expert knowledge of the game and meticulous notes throughout the season.
The winner is,
ALI WHITE!
His solid midfield work throughout the season has been commendable. Solid defence and even managed to make space for
himself and others to shoot, (a good chance today as well). His touch was sadly lacking and badly needed in the match last
week against the old codgers. As the call went, between the players (when he had the ball)
ALI! ALI! ALI!
OI! OI! OI!
Well this is goodbye from your official Fanzine, I am now off to go and panic before next weeks exams. I hope you have
enjoyed reading these pointless newsletters, (a little bit like our season) and don't forget they don get posted on the official
Holgate's Heroes Web site at the following address:
