In the second overtime, the Slicers again scored when Aguilar fed Koltai who dribbled by 3 players into the box and slotted a shot with his left foot.  The Slicers were led defensively by Ben Tobar and Jon Brugos.  The outside backs (Chris Strobel and Ryan Schnitzer) also played a vital role.  This win was a very big Duneland match to get under our belt!  Vince Ganzberg

Well played game of high intensity from both sides.  Marian controlled thefirst half and Memorial swung the momentum to their favor in the second. Both teams squandered opportunities throughout the game as the action went end to end.  Much of the direct attack was deliberate to avoid the poor playing surface as each team sent long, probing passes into the defense.
Carlos Vargas played an outstanding game on defense for the Crimson Chargers.  A rematch in the sectional would be much anticipated by both teams.  Next game for Memorial is at Central on Thursday the 23rd.

As is the case in nearly every Central/Memorial match the emotions ran high as the first half began with a dominating performance from the
Crimson Chargers.  After the first 15 minutes the Blazers turned the tables and controlled the remainder of the half.  Bolting out of the gates in the second frame the Chargers struck first with a long throw and header beating a fine effort from the Central GK.  After some physical play leading to several cautions and one ejection (EMHS coach) the game was solved with ten minutes left when Derek Sapikowski fed a pass through to a streaking Chris Van Orsdoll for a full volley that beat the Central defense for the second time.  This was the first regular season win for the Chargers over Central in 10 years (not since '89).

In a game of two similar playing styles it was the desire that made the difference.  Penn playing an attractive ball control game completely
dominated the first half limiting the Memorial offense to few chances on the net.  Playing not to lose, the Memorial midfield sat back and watched as the Penn midfield maintained possession and applied constant pressure on the defense.  Coming out at half and giving up another goal seemed to awaken the spirits as Sean Broderick led the comeback registering a hat-trick against
the daunting Penn defense.  After suffering a bloody nose in the first half, compliments of his own teammate, Nick Slabaugh returned to lead a strong defensive surge during the latter stages of the game to swing the momentum in Memorial's way.  Minus two key players on Penn's side (Ryan Marques and Mike Erickson) the Kingsmen will surely welcome a rematch in the sectional.
Meanwhile, the Chargers knowing what could be sustained for an entire eighty minutes will also welcome the challenge.  To be continued...
Penn won the Northern Indiana Conference crown with the tie.

During a mostly sloppy game the Cavemen of Mishawaka showed grit and
determination that Memorial lacked holding the Crimson Charger offense in
check.  Led by an admirable effort from the Mishawaka goaltender the
constant physical pressure applied by the Cavemen frustrated the Elkhart
Memorial side.  Sean Broderick lobbed a goal to the far post early in the
game for the winner but the team needed a back post crashing header from
Chris Van Orsdoll to seal the win in the late stages of the match.  Tribute
to the Mishawaka team for a hard fought effort and undying determination.

Penn 1 Marian 0 in OT
Penn junior midfielder Patrick Miller placed a perfect shot past Marian's goalkeeper Jason Ditsch with 1:21 to go in overtime to win the Penn sectional on a rainswept field at the Penn soccer complex  Saturday night.
Penn 15-1-2 and ranked eighth in the latest state soccer poll,  advances to its own regional Wednesday night where it will meet Northridge,
The Kingsmen win knocked the No. 1 ranked Knights out of the state tournament and also ended the Marian season at 17-1-1. It also avenged a Penn's only loss of the year, a 2-1 loss to the Knights in early September.
It was, as Penn coach Tony Bauman put it, a game that neither team should have lost. And, in fact neither team did lose it. Millers shot was unstoppable from just about any angle, skimming about 35 yards across the wet grass, aided by a 15 mile per hour wind at his back, and obscured from Ditsch's view by two Marian defenders, who were marking him.
"I saw a man off to my left and I saw an opening to the goal," Miller said. "All I wanted to do was shoot it low and hard at the side net. I saw their keeper get the tips of his fingers on the ball and then I saw it in the net."Scoring Summary

OSCEOLA_Interscholastic sports games just don't get much better than this.
Penn junior midfielder Patrick Miller placed a perfect shot past Marian's goalkeeper Jason Ditsch with 1:21 to go in overtime to win the Penn sectional on a rainswept field at the Penn soccer complex  Saturday night.
Penn 15-1-2 and ranked eighth in the latest state soccer poll,  advances to its own regional Wednesday night where it will meet Northridge, a XX-XX winner over Northwood in the Bethany Christian sectional. Action starts at 7:00.
I saw their keeper get the tips of his fingers on the ball and then I saw it in the net." Miller had played the game with a right leg which was rated earlier in the day at 86 percent of its regular strength due to a sprain which occurred in Wednesday's win over Elkhart Memorial. Ironically, it was with that injured leg that Miller scored the game winner.
Ditsch said he didn't see the ball until the last second because he was screened out by two defenders. Marian coach Ben Householter  also thought his defenders had slipped on the wet grass.
As is the usual occurence in highly competitive soccer matches, the defense ruled the day. Marians defenders (Ryan Brady, Cory Vavul, James Sotebeer, and Benjamin Brasseur) played an outstanding game as Penn was able to control midfield and outshot the Knights, 15-6. But none of the shots were point blank, due inpart to the Knights ability to control Penn's Mike Erickson and keep him away from Ditsch.
"Our plan was to try to play to the corners and turn it in to get behind their defenders," Bauman said. "But they wouldn't let us. So we decided to start taking shots whenever we had the opportunity from in front of the goal, hoping the wet ball would cause their keeper problems. But Ditsch was just outstanding tonight, too."
On the other end, the Penn defenders Andrew Trail, Matt Young, and Andrew Cashen kept Marian from getting a reasonable shot also. Bauman said his idea was not to let the Knights face the goal in a shooting position with the ball on their foot. "We were able to do that," Bauman said. "And that may have been the difference tonight. Really, Young, Andy Cashen and Trail played great tonight. Ryan Marques had another great game, too."
"This sectional has always had games like this, " Bauman continued. "Whether it is Central, Memorial, Marian or us, this is a very competitive sectional. This year there were only five other sectional that had two ranked teams in it."
Householter said the number one ranking really did mark his team. "Once we hit number one, it seemed like every team we played played us really hard, because we were number one," he said. "We knew we were in for a fight in this sectional and our kids gave it everything they had tonight. We just didn't get the goal is all."
