After Alyssa Bailey scored for Argos in the 38th minute, Tara CLarney immediately countered Elizabeth Clark then scored in the 59th minute, assisted bt Catherine Bowen.Minutemen Edge Dragons
“Soccer is a crazy game.”  Those words from Argos Girls coach Jon Alcorn summed up the regional final as Concord edged the Dragons 2-1 Wednesday night.  Argos outshot the visitors 16 to 4, but ended up on the short end of the
scoreboard.  Concord seemed to have the edge the first fifteen minutes, as the visitors amassed 8 first half corner kicks.  Midway through the first period, momentum shifted to the hosts and when Alyssa Bailey scored with 1:12 to go, the Dragons looked to go into the break with the lead.  Concord, however, had different plans.  Taira McLarney won a cleared ball
and hit a shot from 22 yards that looped just under the bar to tie the score with 48 seconds left in the half.  In the second half, the Dragons seemed to suffer no ill effects from the late score, and came out strongly, controlling play.  However, Concord’s sweeperDana Charlesworth and keeper Bethany Miller turned back every Dragon attack.
Twenty minutes into the period, Elizabeth Clark hit a long ball to Catherine Bowen.  Bowen finished to put Concord up 2-1.  With the Minutemen defense packed in,Argos switched to the wings and began sending good crosses over.  Several wild
scrambles occurred in front of the net, but the Dragon’s luck finally ran out along with the clock.  Coach Alcorn noted, “ I’m disappointed because we outplayed them and lost, but there is not much the girls could have done differently.  We had great
passes and crosses one after the other even to the last minute.  When you do the right thing and the ball doesn’t bounce your way, you just have your cry, and chalk it up as part of the game.  I’m just proud that we never gave up.”  The Lady Dragons finished the year at 15-3, setting records for most wins and fewest losses, along with most goals in a season (65) and fewest goals allowed (20).  That latter statistic, according to Alcorn, “belongs greatly to the two
seniors, Liz Hayn andTracy Ummel.  They anchored a defense that improved from allowing 40 goals last seasonto 20 this year.” Concord moves on to the Lake Central Semi-state on Saturday with a
13-6-1 record.
