11/2/97
We almost won our second game! The first game was low-scoring affair featuring long rallies. It was close throughout but we couldn't quite catch them at the end. I figured our strategy would be to tire them out, but I guess the wrong team got tired. The next two games also featured good rallies, but weren't quite as close. This week's players were Glenn, Raynette, Mike, Terry, Renee, Cynthia, Justin, and Matt. Bruce decided to keep score for this match. Glenn said the opponents reminded him of our team about five years ago. Well, maybe ten..

Iolani won its senior game 35-13 against Punahou on Friday. Joe Igber ran for 150 yards to close within 217 yards of Mosi Tatupu's single season ILH rushing record. Iolani plays Kamehameha this coming Saturday night at Aloha Stadium in the big rematch.

Hey, we won our first game! We still lost the match, but we won the second game while narrowly dropping the first and third games. Chalk up number one for us in the win column. Cynthia and Justin made their season debuts. Also in action this week were Raynette, Lori, Renee, Terry, Bruce, and Matt. Glenn decided to coach this one in his slippers from the sidelines and Colleen was cheering us on. Jason and Janelle were someplace outside playing ball.

Ethan has his "Senior Game" this coming Friday afternoon at Iolani. They'll be playing Punahou.

Late breaking news: free play this Saturday at Manoa gym will be from 5:00 to 7:30.

Since we were busy playing Saturday night, we had a hard time hearing the Iolani-St. Louis game (maybe I should have brought a bigger radio). Anyway if for some reason you want a tape of the game (or more likely some other game), you can get it from Starcomm Sports Radio.

There will be free play again this Saturday at Manoa gym. This week the times will be from 6:00 to about 7:30.

The Move-It team was back in action Sunday at Booth Park for the first time in about a year and a half. The new team members this season are Renee and Timmy, while Matthew has greatly improved his skills. The other players were Lorianne, Glenn, Ray, Terry, and Mike. Bruce and Susan decided to sit this first match out and watch. Sasha was in uniform ready to come in at a moment's notice and Jason and Janelle were writing up our schedules on the sidelines. We lost the first game 13-1, but we were just getting warmed up. The next two games were much closer.

We wound up playing five-on-five at Manoa gym Saturday. The teams were Sasha, Timmy, Lorianne, Teri, and Glenn against Sasha's friend, Mike, Renee, Raynette, and Terry. Dean was baby sitting on the sidelines. Later on, we were joined by Matthew and Bruce.

Just learned that the Manoa gym time is 7:00 instead of 7:30. 7:00 to 9:00. In the meantime, Iolani has moved up to #2 in the state and gets its rematch against #1 St. Louis at Aloha Stadium Saturday evening.

Glenn has secured Manoa gym for free play 7:30 to 9:30 on Saturday night. Then if that's not enough, Howard's league is on! The Move-It! team is scheduled to play at Booth Park Sunday at 6:00. Should be interesting seeing everyone dust off the cobwebs..

Iolani continues to roll along as they defeated Punahou 35-7 to take second place for the ILH first round. The HHSA site continues to improve. Check out its ILH Football section.

Glenn reports that Howard Ching may be starting up a volleyball league again on October 19. Stay tuned (again).

After the big Kamehameha win, Iolani moved up to number 3 in the state rankings. They continued their streak as they rolled over Pac-Five 45-7 Saturday evening. Joe Igber rushed for 262 yards and scored three touchdowns for the Raiders.

SEPTEMBER 1997

Lorianne, Jason, Janelle, Susan, Mike, Terri, Dean, Elan, and Tayla joined Cynthia, Vernon, and Justin to watch Iolani play Kamehameha at Aloha Stadium. It turned out to be one of the most exciting football games I have seen in recent years. Here's one spectator's report.

The Honolulu Star Bulletin announced that the Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) has started up a web site. After snooping around the site, I discovered that Iolani School has their own web page too.

The HHSAA site has the state tournament times and locations for the various sports, but not the regular season schedules (yet?). However here's the schedule for this Saturday's (September 27) ILH games:

The latter two games will be on the radio too. See you at the Stadium.


AUGUST 1997

The picnic was a big success with nice waves at the beach, lots of food, and extra batteries for the CD player. What was different for our volleyball picnic this year is that we actually played some volleyball. Bruce brought his net out of the mothballs and Matthew displayed his improving skills honed by his afternoon practice sessions with Ross Ozaki. Vern was the big star of the match showing he still has his old volleyball form.

Ethan had a football game that Vern could only dream about. He not only made two interceptions against Waipahu, but returned both for touchdowns(!) in Iolani's 42-19 victory. Catch the story in the August 30 sports section. (OK, let's see him do it again. 8)

As you might have expected, the location of the picnic has changed. Sasha has informed us that it will now be at Bellows. Meet at the first bathroom at 1:00 pm Sunday.

And now what you all have been waiting for, old high school wrestling results! Ethan did well in this sport too.

I bet you didn't know Vernon was so modest. I discovered that Ethan was named to the Star Bulletin ILH All-Star team last season. Belated congratulations.

Cynthia has scheduled our summer picnic for Sunday afternoon, August 31 (Monday is Labor Day). It is tentatively set for Manoa (not Makiki!) Park. She insists she's bringing the noodles this time.

Susan is nearly fully recovered and is now working 6 hours a day (soon to be 7). Watch out! She's started taking T'ai Chi.

Vern found out that Tom is on the internet. Email him at [email protected]. Ethan and Justin now have their own email accounts. Bruce is also on the internet, but his email isn't quite working yet.

Glenn's father, Paul, passed away at the age of 86. Our sincerest condolences to Glenn and his family.

Raynette and Sasha recently visited Hong Kong where they experienced the celebration(?) of the China turnover.

Oops. Vern sent me a correction. Ethan now wears #21 for the Red Raiders. He changed his number last year.

Ethan will be entering his senior year (already?). He obtained his driver's license earlier this year and was able to manage several months of accident free driving. He is currently preparing for the Iolani football season. Watch for number 38 in the defensive backfield.

Where are they now Department. Sarah has started a new career as a first grade teacher at Avenal Elementary in California. She still lives on her farm with Michael (Moki), Kellen (going to kindergarten), Michaela, two dogs, a cat, two chickens, and a pet goat.


JULY 1997

There are rumors that the Move It! volleyball team may actually be back in action soon. Stay tuned to this site as the story develops...

Don't know when our next volleyball party will be. But, before anybody asks, I'm bringing the noodles!
