News for 10/2 Jim Ross's comments on WWF recent signee Ray Traylor (Big Boss Man) from the WWF Hotline. :: Credit goes to MiCasa for the following transcript :: We can announce that the WWF has re-signed one of it's biggest superstars of a few years back, in the Big Boss Man, who has signed with the WWF. The Big Boss Man will be debuting in the next couple of months. We had the opportunity to meet with the Boss Man a couple of weeks ago. He looked to be in the best shape I have ever seen him in. He's running miles (plural) each and every day ... he's training harder ... he's about 290 lbs, which is quite frankly, about 100lbs less than he weighed when I first met him. We think that in his mid-30s, he still has some gas left in that tank. He's hungry, he wants to re-prove himself. I think he will be a pleasant addition to the competitive nature in the WWF here, and certainly will be a welcome healthy addition to the talent roster within the next 30-60 days. Preliminary Breakdown Buyrate Dave Scherer reports that the WWF's latest Pay-Per-View IYH: Breakdown received a buyrate somewhere between 0.7 and 0.9, meaning that about 300,000 fans bought the show. Rick Rude has Cancer. Thumbs up to Hacksaw By JIM VARSALLONE -- Herald Sports Writer Thursday, October 1, 1998 Hi Ohhhhhh! Hacksaw Jim Duggan made a career on those two little sounds, exciting crowds from coast to coast. Audiences echoed his greeting followed by the chorus USA! USA! USA! Plain and simple, Duggan is a brawler. Don't ever compare him to Lou Thesz, Vern Gagne or Chris Benoit. That is unfair. It is fair to say fans love Hacksaw Jim Duggan. When Duggan appeared on WCW Monday Nitro to thank fans and shock them with the announcement of cancer, it hit home hard with most. Duggan helped pro wrestling grow. So he never did a moonsault or plancha or death valley driver. So what. Duggan struck a chord with ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages. His patriotic stance, waving the red-white-blue, the stars and stripes, proved crowd pleasing. Here stood a guy holding the American flag in one hand and a 2-by-4 in the other. How patriotic is that. Duggan rode a wave of success in the World Wrestling Federation when Hulk-A-Mania reigned supreme. He dropped Andre the Giant with one desperation swing of the 2-by-4. He is a true Tough Guy, a phrase he would often use to mock his opponent. Fans and friends were relieved to hear doctors removed all the cancer. WCW announcers told fans the good news during the WCW pay-per-view Fall Brawl: War Games. Duggan is more than just a wrestler. He is a husband and a father. I can remember him holding his baby in the parking lot of the Tampa Fairgrounds away from all the hoopla inside. It was a moment with his child, just he and his child. Duggan interacted with fans. He signed autographs, posed for pictures and talked shop with those who would listen. There were many. When WCW taped shows at Universal Studios in Orlando, Duggan routinely spent time with fans. A little over one year ago, following an autograph session, I caught up briefly with Duggan and asked a few questions. He obliged with some answers. *How did you get started in professional wrestling? ``Fritz Von Erich in Texas Championship Wrestling gave me my start back when I was playing college football for Southern Methodist University (SMU). Fritz was an SMU alum, and he thought professional wrestling would work out good for me. After one year in the NFL in 1977 with the Atlanta Falcons and one year in the CFL in 1978 with the Toronto Argonauts, I called Fritz up and made the move to wrestling.'' Duggan played offensive guard. He spent his year with the Falcons on injured reserve, recovering from two knee surgeries. *What was your biggest match? ``Wrestling Andre the Giant in Madison Square Garden.'' *What do you think of WCW and how it has taken off? ``I think it's great. Professional wrestling seemed to be the ugly duckling of sports, but time and time again we draw huge crowds and post big numbers on our TV ratings. I don't think pro wrestling gets the respect it deserves.'' *Can you mention a few up-n-comers on the pro wrestling circuit? ``Renegade. Craig Pittman. High Voltage.'' Footnote: The interview was over a year ago. *What are your future plans? ``Hang here in WCW and hopefully get a shot at the Hulkster. In 18 years of professional wrestling, I've never been a title guy. I'm not worried about any title. I just want to get in the ring with the Hulkster and wrestle against him. I wrestled with him years ago many times in New York. I was on his tag team, but I never wrestled against him. So, hopefully, I'll get to wrestle him one time before I finish up.'' Hacksaw Jim Duggan never received that shot, that one big main event to wrestle Hogan. But he received a bigger prize. His life. | ||||||||||||||||
