Syed Saba Karim
Syed Saba Karim was selected in
the Indian side as early as 1988 when he was the reserve wicketkeeper
for the tour of West Indies. He did not have much chance to play on the
tour and was forgotten on return. He switched from Bihar to Bengal in
the Ranji Trophy in an attempt to catch the selector's eye. After some high scores and steady wicketkeeping in the domestics, he was selected as the reserve wicketkeeper to the tour to South Africa in 1996. When Nayan Mongia was injured, Karim made his debut in an ODI and impressed by scoring 55 runs in 48 balls. He was in and out of India's one day side in the 1996-97 season. In the 1997-98 season he has been preferred to Mongia for ODIs because although Mongia's wicketkeeping is superior, it is believed that Karim can score runs more quickly. However, his selection has been quite controversial and Karim did nothing of note to prove his critics wrong. When he was about to be dropped, he scored a valuable 26 runs and was one of the heroes in India's sensational victory vs Pakistan in Karachi. |
