Anil Kumble
On February 7th 1999, Anil Kumble
achieved a feat that had only been managed once before. Against arch-rivals
Pakistan in the second Test at Delhi, Kumble took every single wicket
in the second innings, at a cost of 74 runs. For one who looks so unassuming,
this is an example of just how much lies under the surface. Although officially a leggie, it is his well-concealed googly and top-spinning flipper, along with his faster balls, that are his strike weapons rather than the leg-break, which he turns little. He is always economical - a bonus in the one-day game - and is also a useful lower-order batsmen. Kumble made his debut on tour in England in 1990 to wide acclaim but it took a couple of years before he cemented himself into the side as a reliable bowler. During a spell in England with Northamptonshire in 1995, he became the first bowler in 5 years - the first leggie in 24 - to capture more than 100 wickets. |
