Venkatesh Prasad
As the perfect partner for Javagal
Srinath or as a penetrative bowler in his own right, Venkatesh Prasad
has always been an important member of the Indian team ever since his
debut in 1996. Tall and proportionally built, Prasad, who like Srinath
is from Karnataka, has been in his Karnataka colleague's shadow but on
the occasions he has had to trundle on his own, he has been able to rise
to the occasion. And at times he has overshadowed the more experienced Srinath with his own subtle brand of seam bowling. A diligent medium pacer who at times can be positively hostile, Prasad's armoury includes a deceptive slower ball, an intelligent bouncer and a deadly yorker. Not unexpectedly, Prasad has achieved better figures in more helpful conditions abroad than at home, where the slow, bald tracks have not encouraged his mode of attack. Yet, paradoxically enough, his most devastating spell has been achieved at Chennai where in the first Test in January 1999, he brought the Pakistan second innings to a swift end with figures of six for 33 which included a spell of five for zero. A calm, unruffled team man, Prasad's effective seam bowling has been invaluable to the country in the shorter version of the game where he can be hostile in his opening spell and difficult to score off in the slog overs |
