The Detroit Red Wings are the returning Stanley Cup Champions this year and are going to go home champions. The Detroit Red Wings Have already participated in the first and second rounds of the Stanley Cup Finals for the 1997-1998 season. In the first round, they destroyed the Phoenix Coyotes. Detroit then went on to the second round to defeat the St. Louis Blues during game five, thereby throwing St. Louis out of the playoffs. Detroit is at the moment playing against the Dallas Stars for the position of Western Conference Champion, who will in turn proceed on to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Red Wings last year won the Stanley Cup for being the Number 1 team in the NHL and also the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl for being the Western Conference champions. Detroit also won the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl during the 1994-1995 championship season.

While the Detroit Red Wings were in the Eastern Conference, they won the Prince of Wales Trophy, the trophy presented to the Eastern Conference champions, 13 times beginning in the 1933-34 season and ending in the 1964-65 season.
