FOOTY FACT:

The Demons have won 12 premierships: 1900,26, 39, 40, 41, 48, 55, 56, 57, 59, 60, 64.

If the Demons had won in 1958 - they played against the Magpies - they would have won a record 6 straight premierships. Ironically, the Magpies have the current record with 4 in a row.

The Dees State of Origin

Victoria defeated the Allies by 53 points, 148 to 95 at the Gabba

The only Demon to represent Victoria in the clash against the Allies was:

Jeff White was a late inclusion into the side, but, coming off the bench, played a solid first half, swapping in the ruck with Everitt on occasions.

The Demons to represent the Allies were:

Matthew Febey didn't play a great game, gathered the leather just 7 times.
Steven Febey and 'Shannas' pulled out to get over niggling injuries.

South Australia defeated the West Australians at Football Park, 143 - 107

The Demon chosen to represent the SA side is:

Todd pulled out due to injury.

The Demons that represented WA are:

Farmer kicked 3 goals in a losing side. He played well, but let himself down with a few costly misses at goal.

Woewodin, though, was quiet, playing a part of the game on the bench. Shane did rack up a number of possessions.

Rising Dees!

Demons who have received nominations for the Norwich Rising Star Award in 1998

  • Round 8 - Travis Johnstone
  • Round 14 - Russell Robertson

Travis Johnstone won the nomination in the clash against arch-rivals Collingwood where the Dees came out triumphant by 3 points. He kicked 4 goals and was in the votes.

Russell won his nomination in a 4-goal effort to help upset the soaring Eagles in Perth. Robertson was a vital ingredient in the winning side, willing to demonstrate his footy prowess up forward.

DEE of the Month - James McDonald

Ano ther up and coming demon is young James McDonald, a 21 year-old from the country. He is following in the footsteps of his brothers, Alex and Anthony, the latter a Demon himself.

James, a lively forward pocket, was reluctant to play senior footy because of his slight frame, and although he reckons he still needs some extra kilos, is doing well, as evidenced by his 3-goal haul on the weekend against West Coast.

 Did You Know?

The Dees have 6 Brownlow medal winners,

Ivor Warne-Smith in 1926-28,

Dr. Don Cordner in 1946

Brian Wilson in 1982

Peter Moore in 1984

And Jimmy Stynes in 1991

The Wiz

We all know Jeff Farmer, the wiz, the goalsneak, and Melbourne's sometimes inconsistent forward pocket. But do we respect him for what he is worth. Let's face it, when Jeff Farmer is out, the Dees struggle to kick big scores. Yes, Neitz is out, but Farmer is the man no one can match up.

Jeff would be considered in the same category as Geelong's enigma, Ronnie Burns, but I think Farmer would be rated a lot higher. Burns, like Farmer, is capable of slotting through the miraculous goal from the boundary line, but Farmer tends to be able to turn a whole match around with his team-lifting skills.

This is why there was such a sense of urgency around the Melbourne footy club 18 months ago, when Farmer was contemplating leaving footy. He was at home in Western Australia at Christmas time. Two o f his uncles had just died, and h e was contemplating whether or not to return.

Enter then cap tain Garry Lyon and then coach Neil Balme. The pair flew to WA, hired a car and drove to Farmer's small hometown, Mandurah. They convinced young Jeff to come back and he did. He said that if not for that show of faith from Neil and Garry, it would have been the end of his career.

In hindsight, that would rank as one of the biggest disasters in our great game, along with the end of John Coleman's short, yet illustrious career.
