Wakeboarding is a cross between surfing and water-skiing. In
wakeboarding, the rider's feet are strapped in foot bindings, and he or she is towed,
using a ski rope, by a boat. It is closely related to other boardsports such as
skateboarding and snowboarding. Many of the tricks performed on the different boardsports
cross over. The boardsports even have similar terminology. Right now, wakeboarding is the
fastest growing watersport. The first wakeboard was called a Skurfer. It had no feet
bindings, so tricks were limited. It was invented in 1985 by a surfer named Tony Finn. The
skurfer had many faults such as being too buoyant, making it nearly impossible to do
deepwater starts, lack of innovative, and lack of technology was holding it back. In 1990,
Herb O'Brien innovated the new watersport by reinventing the wakeboard. The new board was
called the Hyperlite and set the standard for future wakeboards. There are two common
board shapes. There are surfstyle boards that are shaped like a surfboard. The back tail
is square and narrows to a point at the front tail. This design is quickly becoming
obsolescent. There are also twin tail boards, that are symmetrically shaped boards. These
boards are rectangular shaped.
