Preseason Open Tournament-November 2, 1997 at the Volleyball Gym in Robbinsdale.
The only highlight of the day came when we found out we were the "B" seed, only behind Thumpin' Melons. After that we had little to get excited about, as we finished pool play a dismal 1-5. That was good enough for a tie for third place in our pool. Needless to say we advanced into the lower bracket playoffs, only to lose to our nemesis, Sport Court, 2 games to 1, after winning the first game. This was our final tuneup before a long USAV tournament schedule starts up, with the first "real" tournament on December 7, 1997.
Preseason Open Tournament-November 23, 1997 at the Volleyball Gym.
We faired a little better this time, in going 4-2 in pool play. Again good enough to finish third out of four in our pool, and advance to the lower playoff bracket. This time we pulled out a win in our first playoff match to get to the finals. This proved to be more than we could handle, as we lost the championship in two games.
North Country Region Tournament #1 at St. Catherine's University
The first tounament of the year turns out to be a combination of B and BB teams, as not enough of either signed up for there own, so we were placed into a four team pool along with PPI, Smash, and UMD Superstars. We knew right away that regardless of how we did in pool play, we were already going to be in the playoffs, as there is an upper and a lower playoff here today. We start the day off by being the B seed in the pool and having to play at 8:30 a.m. against UMD. We were a little worried because we are not a good morning team, and today was no exception. Off to a sluggish start, we managed to win the frist game 15-11 and pull off the second one an impressive 15-2. Good start for us, to be sure. Then we wait....One match off and then we ref before we play again. Next up is Smash. We again struggle early , but one more hold on to win game one 15-12. The second game goes more smoothly and we go to 4 and 0 by completing the sweep. Then we play the A seed, PPI, after a short lunch break. During lunch we discover that no matter how we do against PPI, we are already in the upper playoff bracket. Hooray! PPI plays us tough in game one as they pull ahead 8-1, but we fight back to get to game point 14-12, only to bomb at 16-14. We regain our composure and win the second game to win the pool and finish pool play at 5 and 1. Based on this record we got a bye in the first round of playoffs. We then beat VB DIGS two games to none to advance to the championship. We lost the match to Terminal Velocity in two games, as we played our poorest match of the day in the finals. Oh well! We played well the whole day and even though we didn't take home the title, we still started the year out strong.
