Buckna Bowling Club
Buckna Bowling Club was formed in December 1964, after a new church hall was built offering better facilities for the game of bowls. A demonstration match was played by the members of Cloughwater Presbyterian Church in the following January, to get the bowl rolling. At the start a few friendly matches were played and the club entered in the inter church competiton to raise funds for charity. The club had debts but got them cleared by the beginning of 1966-67 season.
The team reached a satisfactory standard and started to run pairs competitons in 1970-71 which still take place every year in November.
The club increased in numbers and split into two teams the 'A' team and the 'B' team (not seeded in anyway). When a new member joins the club he/she chooses which team to play for. Both teams play in the Ballymena Churches league and compete in the The George Glass Cup and the Nelson Cup annually.
At the present time the 'B' team have been challenging for the league and both cups the past few seasons and recently won the league although the 'A' team has many talented players as well.
When many people hear about bowls they think it is a granda's and granny's game with no life to it but this is were there wrong, the majority of the 'B' team players are about late twenties/early thirties and some players (myself for example) are about fifteen. Bowls is truly a sports for all people.
It isn't all about playing four a team either people play in many competitions for themselves (singles, pairs, triples and rinks/fours) which there will probably several taking place each week. (if anyone wants their competion advertised on this website contact me and I will try my hardest to put it on (for free).
