BOSTON (AP) - Carl Everett hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday, lifting the Boston Red Sox over the Oakland Athletics 5-4. He sent a 3-1 pitch from T.J. Mathews (0-1) into the center-field bleachers for his team-leading fifth homer. The home run was the first walkoff homer for the Red Sox since June 14 of last season when Jeff Frye beat the Minnesota Twins. Everett also had an RBI double. Derek Lowe (1-0) got one out for the win. The Athletics have lost five of six. Boston starter Ramon Martinez went six innings, and allowed seven hits and four runs. Omar Olivares pitched seven innings for the A's. He retired 10 straight batters after walking Brian Daubach in the first.

BOSTON (AP) - Pedro Martinez avenged his last loss with the help of four RBIs from Carl Everett and four Oakland errors on Saturday as the Red Sox beat the Athletics 14-2. Martinez (3-0) allowed two runs, five hits and struck out nine in seven innings to beat Tim Hudson (1-1), who outdueled the AL Cy Young Award winner on Aug. 19, 1999 -- 13 appearances ago. Hudson allowed seven runs, six hits and four walks in 1 2/3 innings -- the shortest start of his career. The A's defense didn't help, giving up three unearned runs. Everett was 3-for-4 with two doubles and Brian Daubach also had a pair of doubles for Boston. Manny Alexander tripled, scored three runs and drove in two for the Red Sox. Olmedo Saenz hit a solo home run off Martinez in the second.
Injury to A's Jason Giambi not as bad as feared
BOSTON (AP) - Jason Giambi's knee injury isn't as severe as first
feared and the Oakland first baseman could miss only a game or
two, A's trainer Larry Davis said Saturday. "He's not horribly
swollen today, which is good," Davis said before the game against
Boston. "If he makes the same progress from today to tomorrow, he
could D.H." Giambi pulled up lame running out an RBI groundout
against the Red Sox on Friday night, which Oakland won 13-6. He
was diagnosed with a hyperextended right knee and a strained
right hamstring. "Jason has had hamstring strains before and has
played through them," Davis said. "He's very good at it, and he's
willing to do it."

BOSTON (AP) - Eric Chavez hit a grand slam as the Oakland Athletics scored six runs in the first inning on Friday night to beat the Boston Red Sox 13-6 and send them to their first home loss of the season. Kevin Appier (2-1) allowed three earned runs and eight hits in six innings, striking out six to win his second consecutive start. Frank Menechino and Jason Giambi also homered for the A's. Giambi pulled up lame running out an RBI groundout in the seventh inning. He was diagnosed with a hyperextended right knee. Giambi was expected to be examined after the game. Brian Rose (0-2) retired only two batters and walked four, giving up a two-run homer to Menechino and then walking the bases full before giving up Chavez' third home run of the season. Menechino also doubled and scored in the second to make it 7-0.

BOSTON (AP) - Oakland Athletics first baseman Jason Giambi pulled
up lame running out an RBI groundout against Boston on Friday
night and left the game with injuries to his right knee and
hamstring. "I don't know how I came down on it or when I did it.
It just locked up on me," he said after the A's beat the Red Sox
13-6. "We'll see how it comes back tomorrow. Hopefully, it won't
be too long." Giambi said he was told to come to the park early
on Saturday so that doctors could examine his leg after the
swelling had subsided. Neither he nor manager Art Howe was able
to estimate how long he would be out. "I'll give him tomorrow off
for sure," Howe said. "That will give the trainers a chance to
diagnose it." Giambi was 1-for-3 with two walks and a three-run
homer in the game before he was injured and replaced by his
brother, Jeremy

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Jaret Wright pitched a five-hitter for the second complete game of his career, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Oakland Athletics 5-0 Wednesday for a three-game sweep. Jim Thome hit a two-run double and Manny Ramirez added two hits, including a double, as the Indians swept the A's for the first time since July 21-23, 1995. Cleveland has won 15 of its last 17 games against Oakland. Wright (2-0) struck out six and walked one. His other complete game was a three-hit, 2-0 win over Detroit on June 1, 1998. He did not allow a runner past first and faced just 31 batters, four over the minimum. Thome fouled off six two-strike pitches in the seventh before his broken-bat double off Gil Heredia (0-1). Richie Sexson chased Heredia with an RBI single.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Charles Nagy allowed four hits in eight innings and David Justice homered as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Oakland Athletics 5-1 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight victory. Nagy (1-1) struck out eight and did not allow an Oakland baserunner past second with the exception of Jason Giambi's fourth homer. Nagy improved to 12-5 lifetime against the A's, who lost for the fourth time in five games. Justice hit his third home run of the season against Omar Olivares (1-1) on the first pitch of the third inning to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. Roberto Alomar singled to lead off the fourth, and eventually scored on a double play. He added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Travis Fryman had four hits and four RBIs and Chuck Finley and three relievers combined to strike out 16 Oakland batters as the Cleveland Indians beat the Athletics 9-4 Monday night. Finley, who signed with Cleveland as a free agent after spending the first 14 years of his big league career with Anaheim, struck out 10 for the 28th time in his career. However, he couldn't hold a 4-2 lead in the sixth and left with his second straight no-decision. Jacob Cruz broke a 4-4 tie by doubling home two runs in the seventh inning. Scott Kamieniecki (1-1) got the win with 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief. Fryman had two-run singles in the first and ninth and Manny Ramirez tripled and singled to drive in a pair for the Indians. Jeff Tam (0-1) took the loss and Eric Chavez homered for Oakland.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Jason Giambi hit a grand slam and also scored on his younger brother Jeremy's sacrifice fly as the Oakland Athletics broke out of their offensive slump Sunday with a 14-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Making his first start for the A's, Jeremy Giambi hit an RBI triple to start a five-run sixth inning. Jason Giambi's slam highlighted a six-run seventh as Oakland stopped Chicago's four-game winning streak. The Athletics began the day hitting a league-low .206. Kevin Appier (1-1) pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and four hits. Ray Durham hit his third homer of the season for the White Sox, a two-run shot in the sixth. Kip Wells (0-1) struggled with his control, walking six -- one intentionally.
A's Jones activated; Service designated for assignment
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Right-handed reliever Doug Jones, who
began the season on the 15-day disabled list because of a
strained lower back, was activated Sunday by the Oakland
Athletics. To make room for Jones on the roster, the A's
designated right-handed Scott Service for assignment, meaning in
the next 10 days, he must be traded, released or sent outright to
the minor leagues. Jones was placed on the disabled list a week
ago, retroactive to March 23. He appeared in five spring training
games while battling the back problem, compiling a 4.32 ERA. The
42-year-old Jones, starting his 16th season in the major leagues,
ranks 10th on baseball's career saves list with 301 and 26th in
games pitched with 792. Service appeared in two games for
Oakland, allowing two runs and one hit in two innings.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Frank Thomas had three hits, including a three-run homer, and the Chicago White Sox won their fourth straight game by defeating the Oakland Athletics 7-3 Saturday. Mike Sirotka (1-1), who allowed a career-high four home runs in Chicago's season-opening 10-4 loss at Texas, kept Oakland batters in the park while allowing six hits and three runs -- one earned -- in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two. The White Sox matched their longest road winning streak since last June even though shortstop Jose Valentin committed four errors. Thomas, who is hitting .541, hit Ron Mahay's (0-1) changeup and into the left-field bleachers. Mahay allowed six runs and nine hits in four innings.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Ray Durham hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning as the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Oakland Athletics 7-6 on Friday night. Durham's homer off Mike Magnante (0-1) highlighted the four-run inning that was extended by a catcher's interference call on Ramon Hernandez. With two outs and a run in on Carlos Lee's RBI double, pinch-hitter Jeff Abbott grounded out to second base, but was awarded first base because Hernandez's glove touched the bat on the swing. Durham followed with his second home run of the season to give the White Sox the lead. Scott Eyre (1-0) picked up the victory in relief despite allowing Hernandez's two-run homer in the sixth that gave Oakland a 6-2 lead. Heath Foulke pitched the ninth for his first save.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Frank Menechino, playing in place of the injured Randy Velarde, hit his second homer in three games and added a run-scoring groundout in a three-run third as the Oakland A's defeated the Detroit Tigers 8-2 Wednesday. Eric Chavez also homered for the A's, Matt Stairs had an RBI single and Giambi, Ben Grieve and Ramon Hernandez all added sacrifice flies. Omar Olivares (1-0) allowed two runs and six hits in 7 1/3 innings as the A's, who took two of three from Detroit, won their opening series of the season for the first time since 1993. Tony Clark drove in the Tigers' first run with a sixth-inning single. Detroit added another run in the eighth. Brian Moehler (0-1) allowed five runs on seven hits in six innings for Detroit.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Forget the sophomore jinx for Tim Hudson. Last year's rookie pitching sensation opened his second season by holding Detroit hitless for 6 1/3 innings en route to Oakland's 3-1 victory over the Tigers on Tuesday night. Hudson allowed only one hit -- Tony Clark cleanly doubled to the left-center field gap on the right-hander's 100th pitch. Hudson (1-0), who went 11-2 last year to finish with the highest winning percentage ever by an Oakland rookie, struck out eight and walked three in the A's first win of the season. Clark had Detroit's only two hits. He singled in the ninth to set up a run that scored on Jason Isringhausen's wild pitch. C.J. Nitkowski (0-1) allowed three runs -- only one earned -- in six innings.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Hideo Nomo won his American League debut with seven strong innings, and the Detroit Tigers opened by beating the Athletics, 7-4, Monday night before the largest baseball crowd ever at the Oakland Coliseum. Dean Palmer went 4-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs and Deivi Cruz went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored to help make Phil Garner a winner in his debut as Tigers manager. Two-time AL MVP Juan Gonzalez, acquired from Texas in a nine-player trade, went 0-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts in his Detroit debut. A crowd of 53,498 saw Jason Giambi homer twice and Matt Stairs and Frank Menechino hit one each -- Oakland's only hits. Kevin Appier, making his eighth career Opening Day start, took the loss.
