Seattle Mariners 19, Toronto Blue Jays 7
TORONTO (AP) - Alex Rodriguez hit three homers and drove in seven runs -- both career highs -- and the Seattle Mariners routed the Toronto Blue Jays 19-7 Sunday for a three-game sweep. Rodriguez scored five times, going 4-for-5. He hit a solo homer in the first inning and a two-run shot in the fourth. Rodriguez hit a towering drive over the wall in left-center field for his seventh career slam in the eighth. John Olerud went 4-for-4 and Jay Buhner homered, doubled and had five RBIs for Seattle, which had 22 hits. Mike Cameron also homered for the Mariners, who have won eight straight against Toronto and outscored the Jays 47-22 in the series. Carlos Delgado hit two homers and Brad Fullmer also connected for Toronto. Chris Carpenter (0-3) took the loss. Freddy Garcia (2-1) got the win.

TORONTO (AP) - Edgar Martinez hit a grand slam for his 200th career homer as the Seattle Mariners beat the Toronto Blue Jays 17-6 on Saturday. Martinez homered off Pedro Borbon to give Seattle a 10-4 lead in the sixth inning. John Mabry and Mark McLemore also homered for the Mariners, who have won seven straight against the Blue Jays. Seattle jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Roy Halladay (1-2) on Alex Rodriguez's two-run double and John Olerud's RBI single. Toronto went ahead with four runs in the third inning on Marty Cordova's RBI groundout, Raul Mondesi's RBI single and Tony Batista's two-run double. Mabry and McLemore homered in the fourth. The Mariners scored five times in the sixth. Frankie Rodriguez (1-0) pitched 3 1/3 innings for the win. He allowed one run and three hits. Halladay gave up five runs on nine hits in four innings.

TORONTO (AP) - Edgar Martinez hit a three-run homer as the Seattle Mariners scored six runs in the first inning to knock out David Wells and beat the Toronto Blue Jays 11-9 on Friday night. Wells (1-1) matched the shortest outing of his career. He gave up consecutive singles before Martinez hit a 426-foot homer to give Seattle a 3-0 lead. After a walk and a single, Dan Wilson hit another three-run homer. Martinez, who had five RBIs, added a two-run single in the second inning off Pete Munro to make it 9-0. Jamie Moyer (2-1) allowed four runs and nine hits in five innings. The Blue Jays narrowed the lead to 9-6 in the sixth. Carlos Delgado homered in the third. Alberto Castillo hit a solo homer in the eighth. Tony Batista and Jose Cruz Jr. hit solo shots off Kazuhiro Sasaki in the ninth for Toronto.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Brad Fullmer triggered a four-run eighth inning with a tiebreaking, two-out double and Tony Batista added a two-run homer as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Anaheim Angels, 6-2, Wednesday night. Reliever Mark Petkovsek (0-1) hit Homer Bush with a pitch with one out and Raul Mondesi singled for his first three-hit game for the Blue Jays. After Carlos Delgado struck out, Fullmer lined the next pitch off the low fence in the right-field corner for a 4-2 lead. Batista greeted Lou Pote with his fifth homer. Pedro Borbon (1-0) got one out for his first AL victory. Garret Anderson hit an RBI single in the first and the Angels added a run in the fifth on doubles by Darin Erstad and Adam Kennedy.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ramon Ortiz pitched five steady innings in his first game of the season, and Darin Erstad hit a three-run homer Tuesday night as the Anaheim Angels beat Toronto 5-4. Ortiz (1-0) gave up a pair of runs -- Raul Mondesi's two-run homer in the fifth -- and seven hits, with four walks and four strikeouts. Anaheim's Mo Vaughn hit his first homer of the year, a solo shot into the left-field seats leading off the third against Kelvim Escobar (0-2) to give the Angels a 5-0 lead. The Blue Jays trimmed the lead to 5-4 with runs in the seventh and eight innings. In the eighth, Jose Cruz Jr. tripled and scored on Shannon Stewart's single. Troy Percival struck out the side in the ninth for his second save.
Blue Jays' Hamilton throws off mound
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) - Toronto right-hander Joey Hamilton threw off
a mound for the first time in three weeks, pitching for 5-to-6
minutes in the bullpen at Grant Field on Tuesday. "Now I've got a
crick in my neck," Hamilton said. "If it's not one thing, it's
another. I felt it last night in my right shoulder blade, now
it's worked its way up into my neck, so I shut it down so it
wouldn't bother my mechanics. But as far as my arm and my
mechanics went, everything felt pretty decent, the crick will go
away." Hamilton had right shoulder surgery during the offseason,
then pulled his right hamstring during spring training and went
on the disabled list March 21.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Scott Schoeneweis, making his second major league start, pitched a three-hitter and Troy Glaus hit a three-homer to lead the Anaheim Angels over the Toronto Blue Jays 6-0 Monday. Garret Anderson hit a two-run double in the third inning and a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Glaus' homer also came in the seventh, against reliever Paul Quantrill. Schoeneweis (2-0), who pitched six innings to beat the New York Yankees 12-6 last Wednesday, struck out four and walked four. He allowed Marty Cordova's leadoff single in the fifth, Homer Bush's two-out double in the sixth and Alex Gonzalez's leadoff single in the eighth. Chris Carpenter (0-2) gave up two runs and three hits in six innings, but walked eight.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rick Helling rebounded from a rocky first start with six solid innings and David Segui hit a go-ahead single, leading the Texas Rangers to a 7-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. Helling (1-0) got off to another shaky start by giving up a two-run double to Carlos Delgado in the first inning. But he didn't allow another runner past second until the fifth, when an error by Luis Alicea enabled Homer Bush to score from first, tying it at 3. Texas regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Segui, who was acquired from Toronto in a three-way trade in March, hit a two-out single up the middle off Roy Halladay (1-1) to drive in Royce Clayton. Helling ended a career-worst four-game losing streak.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - David Wells pitched the first complete-game shutout in the majors this season, tossing a nine-hitter Saturday night as the Toronto Blue Jays snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory over Texas. Rangers starter Kenny Rogers had his 19-game home winning streak snapped. Rogers' (1-1) streak was the third-longest in major league history, dating to June 28, 1997, when he was with the New York Yankees. He also pitched for Oakland and the New York Mets in the streak before winning No. 19 on Monday for the Rangers. Wells (1-0) allowed eight hits and one walk and didn't allow a runner past second base in an efficient 89-pitch outing. Craig Grebeck went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer.

Texas Rangers 11, Toronto Blue Jays 5
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Royce Clayton hit two home runs and Ivan Rodriguez, Ruben Mateo and Rusty Greer also homered for Texas as the Rangers beat Toronto 11-5 on Friday night. Mark Clark (1-0) won for the first time since May 24, allowing four runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He missed the final 2 1/2 months of last season because of a torn ligament in his right elbow. Tony Batista hit his fourth homer for the Blue Jays, who lost their third in a row. Jose Cruz Jr. also homered for Toronto. Toronto took a 4-0 in the second before Texas's comeback began in the third against Frank Castillo (0-1). Frank Catalanotto singled, Tom Evans walked and Clayton hit his first homer to make it 4-3. The Rangers went ahead for good with a two-run fourth.

TORONTO (AP) - Rookie Chad Durbin, making his first major league start, allowed just one hit in six innings and Kansas City scored all nine of its runs in the sixth inning as the Royals beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-3 Thursday. The 22-year-old Durbin (1-0) retired the side in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings. Darrin Fletcher's first-pitch homer leading off the bottom of the third was Toronto's lone hit off Durbin. Toronto's Brad Fulmer hit a two-run homer in the ninth. The Royals, who got a split of the four-game series, sent 13 men to the plate in the sixth. Mike Sweeney singled home two runs, Joe Randa had two RBIs, and Johnny Damon and Carlos Feebles one each. Toronto starter Kelvim Escobar (0-1) gave up three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

TORONTO (AP) - Joe Randa homered twice and Jose Rosado allowed just two hits in six innings Wednesday night, leading the Kansas City Royals over the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3. Randa, who drove in three runs, homered in the second inning for Kansas City's first run, then made it 3-0 in the seventh. He walked with the bases loaded in the eighth against Paul Quantrill. Rosado (1-0) took a shutout into the seventh before a walk to Carlos Delgado followed by Tony Batista's RBI double. Alex Gonzalez's bloop single off Jose Santiago made it 3-2. Ricky Bottalico got three outs for his first save, allowing Batista's third homer of the season. Chris Carpenter (0-1) gave up three runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings. Mike Sweeney's fourth-inning homer gave Kansas City a 2-0 lead.

TORONTO (AP) - Before the smallest crowd in SkyDome history, Shannon Stewart hit his third home run of the season and Jose Cruz hit a two-run shot as the Toronto Blue Jays beat Kansas City 6-3 Tuesday night. Only 13,514 fans watched the Blue Jays improve to 2-0. The previous smallest crowd at SkyDome was 20,258. Stewart tied it at 3 with a solo shot in the fifth. The Jays leadoff man homered twice on opening day. Cruz lined a 428-foot homer in the fourth. Royals starter Jay Witasick (0-1) walked Brad Fullmer and hit Tony Batista to start the sixth before Darrin Fletcher hit a two-run double to make it 5-3. Roy Halladay (1-0) did not allow a hit until Jermaine Dye homered with two outs in the fourth. Halladay allowed five hits in seven innings. Billy Koch worked the ninth for his first save.

TORONTO (AP) - Tony Batista and Shannon Stewart got the Toronto Blue Jays off to a great start. Batista homered twice, including a game-winning drive in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Stewart also connected for two home runs Monday as the Blue Jays opened with a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Batista hit a two-run homer off Jeff Suppan in the fourth and connected again in the 10th off Jerry Spradlin (0-1). Toronto closer Billy Koch got his first career win after wasting a 4-2 lead in the ninth when Gregg Zaun hit a two-run single. Stewart hit opposite-field homers to right-center in the first and fifth innings as the Blue Jays took a 4-0 lead. Toronto starter David Wells struck out five, allowing five hits in six-plus innings.

Blue Jays sign Borbon to contract extension
(AP) - Left-handed reliever Pedro Borbon and the Toronto Blue
Jays agreed Sunday to a $3.2 million, two-year contract
extension. Borbon, already signed for this season at $800,000,
gets a $100,000 signing bonus and salaries of $1.5 million in
2001 and $1.6 million in 2002. The 32-year-old came to Toronto as
part of the offseason deal that sent Shawn Green to Los Angeles
and brought Raul Mondesi from the Dodgers. Borbon was 4-3 with
one save and a 4.09 ERA last year.
