MILWAUKEE (AP) - Geoff Jenkins homered to cap a three-run eighth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat Atlanta 6-3 Saturday, the Braves' fourth loss in five games. Quilvio Veras hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth that tied it at 3. But Mark Loretta, who had homered earlier, opened the Brewers' half with a double off reliever John Burkett (0-2). Jeromy Burnitz then hit a grounder under the glove of first baseman Andres Galarraga, with Loretta scoring on the error. Jenkins followed with his third home run. Brewers starter Jimmy Haynes allowed only an unearned run and three hits through seven innings. David Weathers (1-0) wriggled out an eighth-inning jam for the win. Burnitz and Jenkins singled in runs in the first against Kevin Milwood.

Atlanta Braves 6, Milwaukee Brewers 3
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Tom Glavine pitched into the ninth inning and Javy Lopez hit a two-run homer as the Atlanta Braves beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3 Friday night to end a three-game losing streak. Glavine (2-0) allowed seven hits and struck out seven. He left with a 6-2 lead in the ninth after the Brewers put two runners on base with no outs. Kerry Ligtenberg gave up Ron Belliard's sacrifice fly. Mike Remlinger got the last out for his second save. Steve Woodard (0-2) allowed three runs and 10 hits in seven innings. With the score tied at 2 in the seventh, Walt Weiss drew a one-out walk and advanced on Glavine's sacrifice. Quilvio Veras followed with an RBI double. Veras was thrown out at home by left fielder Geoff Jenkins on Andruw Jones' single. The Braves added three runs in the eighth off Curtis Leskanic.
Brewers' Blanco placed on DL
MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Brewers placed Henry Blanco on the 15-day
disabled list Friday with a lacerated right index finger. Blanco,
acquired during the offseason from the Colorado Rockies in a
trade for Jeff Cirillo and Scott Karl, needed eight stitches to
close a cut between the first and second knuckle after a
collision at home plate. The Brewers, who released backup
catchers Bobby Hughes and Brian Banks during spring training,
will call up Raul Casanova from Triple-A Indianapolis. Casanova
was hitting .320 in six games with one home run and six RBIs
through Thursday. To make room for Casanova on the 40-man roster,
the Brewers moved pitcher Kyle Peterson to the 60-day DL.
Peterson originally was placed on the 15-day DL March 28 after
surgery on his right shoulder.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jason Bere allowed three hits and struck out nine in seven innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-0 victory over the Florida Marlins on Thursday night. Bere (2-0) allowed two singles in the second inning, escaping a bases-loaded jam by striking out pitcher Brad Penny (1-1) to end the inning. Bere also allowed a third-inning single to Brant Brown. In his first start, Bere allowed one run on five hits with eight strikeouts in six innings, a 9-1 victory over St. Louis. David Weathers pitched a hitless eighth and Bob Wickman finished the four-hitter. This was Milwaukee's first shutout since July 30, 1999, against Montreal. Luis Lopez hit a two-run double and scored on Bere's single to right, and Ron Belliard homered.

Floida Marlins 11, Milwaukee Brewers 4
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Alex Gonzalez's two-run single in the fifth inning keyed the Florida Marlins' 11-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at frigid County Stadium on Wednesday night. The temperature was 41 degrees at gametime, and it dropped precipitously as bitter winds whipped off Lake Michigan and turned the field into an icebox. Jaime Navarro (0-2) walked six batters in 4 2/3 innings, including Cliff Floyd, Preston Wilson and Kevin Millar to load the bases in the fifth. Gonzalez then brought home two runs with a single to put Florida up 5-3. Jesus Sanchez (1-0) got the win while allowing six hits and four earned runs in five innings. Jose Hernandez homered in the second inning and had a run-scoring single in the fourth for the Brewers.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Geoff Jenkins homered and Milwaukee's bullpen had another strong outing as the Brewers beat the Florida Marlins 4-3 Monday in County Stadium's final home opener. Jenkins' solo homer put Milwaukee ahead in the second, and the Brewers then capitalized on wildness by Vladimir Nunez (0-1) in the third. he loaded the bases by walking Henry Blanco, Marquis Grissom and Mark Loretta, and Jeromy Burnitz hit a two-run single. Jenkins' sacrifice fly scored Loretta. Florida scored twice in the fifth on an RBI single by Brant Brown and a sacrifice fly by Mike Lowell. Jimmy Haynes (2-0) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings. Shiny new Miller Park, rapidly approaching completion 100 feet behind the current field, will open in 2001.

St. Louis Cardinals 11, Milwaukee Brewers 2
ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Milwaukee Brewers have seen enough of Rick Ankiel to know they don't want to see much more. The 20-year-old rookie had 10 strikeouts in six innings and Mark McGwire led a six-homer attack with his second long ball in as many days in the St. Louis Cardinals' 11-2 victory Sunday. Ankiel (1-0), the second-youngest player in the majors, allowed three hits and walked three in his sixth career start. Ankiel's only trouble came in the third when James Mouton hit an RBI double and in the fifth when Henry Blanco, who had three hits, led off with his first home run. Craig Paquette, Jim Edmonds, Edgar Renteria, Shawon Dunston and J.D. Drew also homered for the Cardinals. Valerio de los Santos (0-1) took the loss.
Brewers to play home opener at County Stadium
MILWAUKEE (AP) - It was supposed to be the happiest day in
Milwaukee Brewers history. Instead, it's just one more opener at
a baseball park that's overdue to be closed. Weather permitting,
the Brewers play host to the Florida Marlins on Monday in the
final opening day at County Stadium, the ramshackle home of
Milwaukee baseball since 1953. Shiny new Miller Park will be
completed in time for the Brewers' 2001 opener -- a full year
later than everyone involved with the franchise had hoped. The
Brewers expected the 1999 opener to be their last at County, and
they threw a party to celebrate their move several hundred feet
south, where Miller Park is being built just beyond the outfield
bleachers. But a devastating crane accident in July killed three
ironworkers, crushed much of the first-base side of the new
stadium and delayed Miller Park's opening for a full year.
Brewers place Acevedo on disabled list
ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Milwaukee Brewers placed right-hander Juan
Acevedo on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with tendinitis in his
right shoulder, retroactive to Friday. Acevedo has made two
relief appearances, allowing two hits in 1 2/3 innings with three
strikeouts. The Brewers purchased the contract of right-hander
Everett Stull from Triple-A Indianapolis and transferred catcher
Robinson Cancel from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day
disabled list.

St. Louis Cardinals 10, Milwaukee Brewers 8
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Mark McGwire hit his first home run of the year and Fernando Tatis went 3-for-4 with four RBIs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 10-8 Saturday. McGwire's homer off Jim Bruske leading off the sixth went an estimated 424 feet into the right center field bleachers and gave the Cardinals a 7-4 lead. Fernando Vina had four hits and two runs scored against his former team. Darryl Kile (2-0) allowed four runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. Jeromy Burnitz hit two solo home runs for the Brewers, giving him five for the season. Dave Veres got the final five outs, striking out four, for his first save with the Cardinals. Steve Woodard (0-1) gave up six runs -- four earned -- and 10 hits in five innings for the Brewers.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jeromy Burnitz hit his third home run of the season and Jason Bere struck out eight in six innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers over the St. Louis Cardinals 9-1 Friday night. Bere (1-0) allowed five hits and two walks, sending the Cardinals their first loss in four games. St. Louis had scored 30 runs in its winning streak. Since losing to Arizona on Sept. 19, 1998, Bere has won eight straight decisions and is unbeaten in 17 starts. Bere, 5-0 last year, twice struck out Ray Lankford and Mark McGwire, including the first inning with a runner at second. Lankford, who fanned three times, is 3-for-17 since being moved to the No. 3 slot. Andy Benes (0-1), in his first game back with St. Louis following two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, allowed two runs and six hits in five innings.

Cincinnati Reds 5, Milwaukee Brewers 1
CINCINNATI (AP) - Ken Griffey Jr. is no longer hitless in Cincinnati. Junior got his first hit for his hometown team, a run-scoring single in the first inning Thursday night, and the Cincinnati Reds got their first win of the season, 5-1 over the Milwaukee Brewers. Michael Tucker and Aaron Boone homered and Ron Villone (1-0) made two saving defensive plays. Griffey slapped a 3-2 pitch from Jaime Navarro (0-1) toward left-center -- the same area where Pete Rose's record-setting hit No. 4,192 landed 15 years ago. The single scored Pokey Reese from third and ended Griffey's 0-for-10 introduction into the NL. Griffey is now 1-for-14. Navarro gave up six hits and five runs in four innings. Villone gave up one run on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Milwaukee Brewers 8, Cincinnati Reds 5
CINCINNATI (AP) - Kevin Barker, Tyler Houston and Geoff Jenkins homered but Ken Griffey Jr. remained 0-for-Cincinnati as the Milwaukee Brewers overpowered the Reds, 8-5, Wednesday night. Seven different Brewers scored and seven had at least one hit as Milwaukee improved to 2-0 under first-year manager Davey Lopes. While the Brewers got the most out of their 10 hits, the Reds again wasted opportunities. They were 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position, leaving them 3-for-26 this season. Griffey walked, grounded out three times against Milwaukee's infield shift, struck out and stranded two runners on third. He's 0-for-10 in three games. Jimmy Haynes (1-0) got the win in his first National League start. Steve Parris (0-1) took the loss.

Milwaukee Brewers 5, Cincinnati Reds 1
CINCINNATI (AP) - Jeromy Burnitz homered twice Tuesday night, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Davey Lopes got his first win as manager in the makeup of Monday's opener, a 3-3 tie called in the sixth due to rain. Burnitz had solo shots in the first and ninth for the eighth multihomer game of his career. The Brewers pulled away by scoring four runs off the stingiest bullpen in the majors last season. Dante Bichette's misplay in right field let in the go-ahead run in the seventh, and the Brewers loaded the bases and scored two more in the eighth. Ken Griffey Jr. failed to get the ball out of the infield for the second game in a row and is 0-for-6 overall. Dmitri Young homered for Cincy and Scott Williamson (0-1) took the loss. Reliever Jim Bruske (1-0) got the win.

Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds, Postponed
CINCINNATI (AP) - A steady rain spoiled Ken Griffey Jr.'s eagerly awaited homecoming Monday, letting up just long enough for the slugging center fielder to get a pregame ovation and two empty at-bats. Then, it returned to wash away one of the most closely watched games of Griffey's life. The Cincinnati Reds blew a three-run lead and wound up tied with the Milwaukee Brewers 3-3 in the sixth inning. After a three-hour delay, the game was called because of rain and a foreboding forecast. It will be made up on Tuesday night, played in its entirety. All statistics from Monday's game count. It was the first time the Reds had failed to complete an opener since umpire John McSherry collapsed and died in the first inning in 1996, forcing a postponement.
