Seattle Mariners 19, Toronto Blue Jays 7
TORONTO (AP) - Alex Rodriguez hit three homers and drove in seven runs -- both career highs -- and the Seattle Mariners routed the Toronto Blue Jays 19-7 Sunday for a three-game sweep. Rodriguez scored five times, going 4-for-5. He hit a solo homer in the first inning and a two-run shot in the fourth. Rodriguez hit a towering drive over the wall in left-center field for his seventh career slam in the eighth. John Olerud went 4-for-4 and Jay Buhner homered, doubled and had five RBIs for Seattle, which had 22 hits. Mike Cameron also homered for the Mariners, who have won eight straight against Toronto and outscored the Jays 47-22 in the series. Carlos Delgado hit two homers and Brad Fullmer also connected for Toronto. Chris Carpenter (0-3) took the loss. Freddy Garcia (2-1) got the win.

TORONTO (AP) - Edgar Martinez hit a grand slam for his 200th career homer as the Seattle Mariners beat the Toronto Blue Jays 17-6 on Saturday. Martinez homered off Pedro Borbon to give Seattle a 10-4 lead in the sixth inning. John Mabry and Mark McLemore also homered for the Mariners, who have won seven straight against the Blue Jays. Seattle jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Roy Halladay (1-2) on Alex Rodriguez's two-run double and John Olerud's RBI single. Toronto went ahead with four runs in the third inning on Marty Cordova's RBI groundout, Raul Mondesi's RBI single and Tony Batista's two-run double. Mabry and McLemore homered in the fourth. The Mariners scored five times in the sixth. Frankie Rodriguez (1-0) pitched 3 1/3 innings for the win. He allowed one run and three hits. Halladay gave up five runs on nine hits in four innings.

Seattle Mariners 11, Toronto Blue Jays 9
TORONTO (AP) - Edgar Martinez hit a three-run homer as the Seattle Mariners scored six runs in the first inning to knock out David Wells and beat the Toronto Blue Jays 11-9 on Friday night. Wells (1-1) matched the shortest outing of his career. He gave up consecutive singles before Martinez hit a 426-foot homer to give Seattle a 3-0 lead. After a walk and a single, Dan Wilson hit another three-run homer. Martinez, who had five RBIs, added a two-run single in the second inning off Pete Munro to make it 9-0. Jamie Moyer (2-1) allowed four runs and nine hits in five innings. The Blue Jays narrowed the lead to 9-6 in the sixth. Carlos Delgado homered in the third. Alberto Castillo hit a solo homer in the eighth. Tony Batista and Jose Cruz Jr. hit solo shots off Kazuhiro Sasaki in the ninth for Toronto.

Detroit Tigers 2, Seattle Mariners 0
DETROIT (AP) - Juan Gonzalez proved Thursday night what he's been saying all week -- that he's ready to play. Gonzalez, making his first home start for Detroit, hit an RBI double to break up a scoreless tie in the eighth inning as the Tigers held off the Seattle Mariners 2-0. Gonzalez, who went 2-for-4 as the designated hitter, hadn't started since the season opener last week in Oakland because of a right hamstring strain. Shane Halter drew a leadoff walk off Arthur Rhodes (0-1) in the eighth before Gonzalez scored him easily with a drive up the right-field gap off Jose Mesa. Dean Palmer scored the second run with a sacrifice fly. Doug Brocail (1-1) pitched one scoreless inning of relief before Todd Jones finished for his third save.

DETROIT (AP) - Aaron Sele pitched a three-hitter for his fifth career shutout and Raul Ibanez drove in two runs as the Seattle Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers, 4-0, Wednesday in Comerica Park's first night game. Sele (1-0), who signed as a free agent in January after going 18-9 last season for Texas, kept the Tigers off-balance with a combination of good control and changing speeds. The Tigers, who broke a five-game losing streak by winning Comerica's opener Tuesday, didn't get a runner past first base. Sele, who pitched the 10th complete game of his career, had 1-2-3 innings in the first, fourth and fifth. Detroit starter Dave Mlicki (0-2), the Tigers' best pitcher last season, gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings.

DETROIT (AP) - Gregg Jefferies and Bobby Higginson each drove in two runs as the Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 5-2 Tuesday at Comerica Park, Detroit's first home game in 104 years that wasn't at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull. Before a crowd of 39,168 on a cold afternoon, Brian Moehler (1-1) -- who started and won the final game at Tiger Stadium -- gave up 10 hits and one walk, but allowed just two runs -- one earned -- in six innings. Freddy Garcia (1-1) gave up five runs and six hits in six innings. Luis Polonia tripled to start the two-run first and scored Comerica's first run when Jefferies singled to right. Detroit made it 4-0 in the second on Higginson's two-run triple.

Seattle Mariners 9, New York Yankees 3
SEATTLE (AP) - Jamie Moyer got lots of support in his second start. Roger Clemens didn't get any. Moyer allowed three hits in eight innings and the Seattle Mariners took advantage of three New York Yankees errors for a 9-3 victory on Sunday. Before the game, Yankees pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre announced he has a form of blood cancer that he said was diagnosed about a year ago. The 58-year-old coach will begin treatment in New York immediately but expects to keep working with the team. Moyer (1-1) struck out four and walked none. He threw 93 pitches, 63 for strikes, and retired 15 of the last 16 batters he faced. The Mariners broke the game open against Clemens (0-1) by scoring six runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-2 lead. Five of the runs were unearned after Carlos Guillen reached on catcher Jorge Posada's throwing error.

SEATTLE (AP) - Paul O'Neill hit an RBI double in the ninth inning to break a tie and give the New York Yankees a 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. Derek Jeter singled off Jose Mesa (1-1) and stole second base on his own. O'Neill then hit a line drive to right-center to score Jeter and give the Yankees the lead. O'Neill is 7-for-7 with two doubles lifetime against Mesa. Jeff Nelson (1-0) came on with a runner on second and one out in the eighth and got two outs for the win. Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth for his third save. Tino Martinez homered for the Yankees, while Raul Ibanez went deep for Seattle. Yankees starter Orlando Hernandez gave up two runs and seven hits in seven innings, with nine strikeouts.

SEATTLE (AP) - Alex Rodriguez hit his 150th career homer as the Seattle Mariners beat the New York Yankees 7-5 Friday night. Seattle won its third straight game after losing its opener to Boston's Pedro Martinez. The Yankees, seeking their third straight World Series title, lost their second straight following a 2-0 start. Rodriguez tied Mickey Mantle at 24 years, 254 days as the fourth-youngest player to reach 150 homers. Rodriguez homered in the first, his second of the year, sending a low, outside pitch from Andy Pettitte (0-1) to the opposite field in right. Pettitte balked in Joe Oliver in the second, but Derek Jeter's first homer of the season, a two-run drive off John Halama (1-0) tied the score in the third.

SEATTLE (AP) - Kazuhiro Sasaki struck out the side in the ninth inning for his first major league save as the Seattle Mariners beat the Boston Red Sox 5-2 on Thursday night. Sasaki, the career saves leader in Japan, struck out Jason Varitek, Scott Hatteberg and Jose Offerman. Mike Cameron and David Bell hit back-to-back homers in the eighth inning and Alex Rodriguez drove in two runs as the Mariners rallied for the victory. John Olerud gave the Mariners their first lead on a fielder's choice off Bryce Florie (0-1), a grounder to first that scored Mark McLemore. Jose Mesa (1-0) pitched one-plus inning for the victory. Trot Nixon hit a solo homer off Aaron Sele, the former Washington State University pitcher making his first start for the Mariners.

SEATTLE (AP) - Jay Buhner homered and drove in four runs Wednesday night, and the Seattle Mariners bounced back from a season-opening loss to Pedro Martinez, beating the Boston Red Sox 9-3. Seattle, the beneficiary of seven walks, overcame a pair of solo home runs by Brian Daubach. Alex Rodriguez and John Olerud also homered for the Mariners, and John Valentin homered for the Red Sox. Kazuhiro Sasaki, the Japanese closer Seattle signed during the offseason, made his Mariners' debut, pitching a one-hit ninth with one strikeout. Seattle loaded the bases in the first against Ramon Martinez (0-1) when Mike Cameron singled, Mark McLemore walked and Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. Olerud hit a sacrifice fly, John Mabry singled for a 2-0 lead and Buhner hit a three-run, opposite-field homer on a 1-2 pitch. Freddy Garcia (1-0) allowed two runs and two hits in five innings.

SEATTLE (AP) - Pedro Martinez started this season the same way he ended last year -- with pure dominance. Martinez struck out 11 and held Seattle to only two hits in seven innings Tuesday night, pitching the Boston Red Sox past the Mariners 2-0 in the first opener at Safeco Field. Playing their first season without Ken Griffey Jr. since 1989, the Mariners didn't come close to scoring on Martinez (1-0), who has given up only one earned run in his last 42 innings. Mike Cameron, one of the players acquired for Griffey, was 0-for-4 and struck out three times. Derek Lowe relieved to start the eighth and completed the combined two-hitter. Before the game, he agreed to a four-year contract worth about $10 million. Jamie Moyer (0-1) took the loss.

Mariners send Tomko to Triple-A
(AP) - Right-hander Brett Tomko, who came to Seattle during the
offseason as part of the trade involving Ken Griffey Jr., won't
start the season with the Mariners. The Mariners on Sunday
optioned Tomko, 26, to Triple-A Tacoma as they reduced their
roster to 25 players. They also optioned right-hander Kevin
Hodges and infielder Carlos Hernandez to their Triple-A farm
club, and outrighted right-hander Todd Williams to Tacoma. Tomko
was acquired by the Mariners on Feb. 10 along with Mike Cameron
and two minor league prospects from Cincinnati for Griffey, who
told the Mariners he wanted to be traded to the Reds. Cameron has
been impressive, but Tomko has not done well on the mound.
Bothered by a sore left Achilles tendon all spring, an injury
that he sustained getting ready for training camp, Tomko posted
an 0-2 record with a 6.59 ERA in three starts and 13 2/3 innings.
