SAN DIEGO (AP) - Al Martin hit a two-run homer and Woody Williams pitched a strong 7 1/3 innings and drove in a run with an RBI double to lead the San Diego Padres to a 5-3 win Saturday night over the Houston Astros. Martin gave the Padres a 2-1 lead with a two-run shot to center off Jose Lima (1-2) in San Diego's four-run third inning. Williams drew a walk on four pitches to precede Martin's at-bat. Damien Jackson followed with a solo home run, and San Diego added another run on two-out infield singles by Phil Nevin and Eric Owens and Bret Boone's RBI single. Williams (2-1), who gave up four homers in his last start, allowed two runs on five hits. Trevor Hoffman notched his second save. Jeff Bagwell homered for Houston.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Jeff Bagwell hit a grand slam and Shane Reynolds hit a solo home run and pitched five effective innings to lead the Houston Astros to a 10-4 win Friday night over the San Diego Padres. Bagwell homered off Kevin Walker to cap a six-run, sixth inning as the Astros broke a 3-3 tie. Walker was making his major league debut. Reynolds (2-0) allowed three runs and 10 hits in five innings. He was more successful with his bat as he hit a solo homer off Brian Boehringer (0-2) leading off the fifth inning to tie the game. Houston then took control in the sixth. Moises Alou led off with a single, knocking Boehringer from the game. Billy Spiers followed with an RBI double off Will Cunnane and Tony Eusebio had an RBI single.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Maybe the San Diego Padres should have used camouflage balls when pitching to Steve Finley. Ex-Padre Finley hit a pair of two-run homers to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-4 win Thursday over the Padres, who wore camouflage jerseys and green hats to honor San Diego's large Navy and Marine Corps population. The Padres committed four errors, although they didn't contribute to any of the Diamondbacks' runs. Finley homered to right field in the fourth inning and to center in the sixth, both off left-hander Sterling Hitchcock (0-1). The second homer gave Arizona a 5-2 lead. Phil Nevin provided San Diego's first three runs on two homers off Brian Anderson (1-0). Mike Morgan pitched two innings for his third save this season.
Padres outright Serafini, recall Kevin Walker
SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego Padres optioned left-handed
reliever Dan Serafini to Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday and
replaced him with left-hander Kevin Walker from Double-A Mobile.
Walker, 23, was 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA in four games out of the
bullpen for Mobile. He was a high school teammate of Chicago Cubs
pitcher Kerry Wood in Grand Prairie, Texas. Serafini was 0-0 with
an 18.00 ERA in three appearances.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ed Sprague delivered for the second straight game, getting a pinch-hit, two-run bloop single in the seventh inning that gave the San Diego Padres a 4-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night. Sprague's single, which landed between left fielder Luis Gonzalez and shortstop Tony Womack, was just the second hit of the three-run inning. On Tuesday night, Sprague hit a tying solo homer in the ninth inning, then homered again leading off the 13th to give the Padres a 3-2 win. Winning pitcher Brian Meadows (2-0), acquired in an offseason trade with Florida, allowed six hits and two runs in seven innings. Loser Armando Reynoso (0-2) gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits in 6 1/3 innings.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ed Sprague homered with one out in the ninth inning to tie the game, then won it with another homer leading off the 13th as the San Diego Padres rallied to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 on Tuesday night. Left-hander Omar Daal was two outs away from Arizona's second complete game in three days when Sprague drove the first pitch he saw into the left-field seats to tie the game at 2. After the Padres threatened but failed to score against sidearmer Byung-Hyun Kim, Sprague hit a 1-0 fastball from Russ Springer (1-1) to left-center to win it. The Padres got runners to second and third with two outs in the 12th against Kim, who then struck out Phil Nevin on a nasty full-count slider. Matt Whisenant (1-0) pitched the 13th to get the win.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Erubiel Durazo hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, and Jay Bell, Steve Finley and Kelly Stinnett also connected to match the club record of five as the Arizona Diamondbacks spoiled the San Diego Padres' home debut with an 8-4 win Monday. Todd Stottlemyre (2-0) was hit on the right knee by Ryan Klesko's line drive in the first but stayed in the game, holding the Padres to three runs and seven hits in six innings. Durazo went 3-for-4 with a walk, a career-high four RBIs and had his second two-homer game. He homered to right-center leading off the fourth, then hit a three-run shot to left to chase Woody Williams (1-1) with one out in the fifth, giving Arizona a 6-2 lead. San Diego's Phil Nevin and David Newman also homered.

MONTREAL (AP) - Hideki Irabu pitched seven strong innings to rebound from a rough first NL outing and lead the Montreal Expos to a 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Lee Stevens hit a bases-loaded single in the sixth to tie the game at 1 and Trace Coquillette walked to force in the go-ahead run. Irabu (1-1) made his first career appearance against San Diego, the team he forced to trade his rights to the New York Yankees in April 1997. Brian Boehringer (0-1) allowed both runs and three hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked two. The Padres scored their only run when Eric Owens singled and stole second with one out in the fifth and scored on Wiki Gonzalez's RBI single.

MONTREAL (AP) - Geoff Blum's pinch-hit, two-run double in the eighth inning rallied the Montreal Expos to a 10-9 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday. The Expos trailed 8-7 following Bret Boone's solo homer off Anthony Telford (2-0) in the top half of the eighth. Blum doubled off reliever Donne Wall (0-2) to score Mike Mordecai and Wilton Guerrero with the go-ahead run in the bottom half. Rondell White doubled one out later to make it 10-8. Expos closer Ugueth Urbina gave up a run in the ninth but finished it out for his first save. Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero and Lee Stevens each hit two-run homers. Ryan Klesko had four RBIs and homered and Ruben Rivera also homered for the Padres, whose Tony Gwynn returned after missing three games with a sore right elbow and went 2-for-5.
Gwynn gets two hits in return to Padres
MONTREAL (AP) - Tony Gwynn returned to the San Diego Padres
lineup Saturday after missing three games because of a sore right
elbow. Gwynn hit an RBI double off Montreal's Dustin Hermanson
for his first hit of the season -- and the 3,068th of his 19-year
career -- in his first at-bat since Opening Day. He later added a
single in the 10-9 loss. He had not played since Monday when he
was hit by pitch by Al Leiter of the New York Mets. He remained
in the game and went 0-for-3 in San Diego's 2-1 loss to New York.
It was feared that he had broken a bone when the arm swelled up
but X-rays taken Wednesday were negative. Gwynn was on the
disabled list twice last season and missed 44 games.

MONTREAL (AP) - Phil Nevin hit a three-run homer and Ryan Klesko added a two-run drive Friday night to lead the San Diego Padres to their third straight win, 10-5 over the Montreal Expos. Brian Meadows (1-0), making his first start for the Padres, led 9-0 before he was chased in a four-run sixth. Montreal third baseman Michael Barrett had two errors, giving him six this season. The Expos had five in all. Damian Jackson got a career-high four hits for the Padres, an RBI double in the third and three straight singles, after striking out in the first. Tony Gwynn was forced to sit out his third straight game with a sore right elbow. Jose Vidro was 4-for-5 with two doubles for Montreal, making him 12-for-21 (.571) with four doubles. Nevin connected off Jeremy Powell (0-1) in the third for a 3-0 lead.
Padres' Gwynn sits out third straight
MONTREAL (AP) - Looking forward to rejoining the San Diego lineup
Friday night for the first time since the Padres' season opener,
Tony Gwynn found that his sore elbow had not recovered enough for
him to extend his arm fully. Gwynn, who got his 3,000th hit last
Aug. 6 at Olympic Stadium, took a few batting practice swings
prior to Friday night's game between San Diego and Montreal
before retreating to the Padres' dugout, shaking his head. The
Padres beat the Expos 10-5. Gwynn told San Diego manager Bruce
Bochy that he wouldn't be able to start. "I hate sitting around,"
Gwynn said. "I've been in that position too many times the last
two years." Struck on the right elbow by an Al Leiter pitch in
the fourth inning Monday, Gwynn remained in the game, though it
was later feared that he had broken a bone when the arm swelled
up. X-rays taken Wednesday were negative. Gwynn was on the
disabled list twice last season and missed 44 games.
Padres put catcher Hernandez on DL, recall Davis
MONTREAL (AP) - The San Diego Padres placed catcher Carlos
Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained
groin and recalled Ben Davis from Triple-A Las Vegas. Hernandez
strained a muscle in his groin while chasing down a dropped third
strike and throwing out Mike Piazza during an 8-5 win over the
New York Mets at Shea Stadium. Hernandez, who was off to a
5-for-8 (.625) start after missing all of 1999 with a ruptured
left Achilles' tendon, is the sixth Padres player to go on the
disabled list this year. Davis had yet to play in a game for Las
Vegas. He was expected to join the Padres in time for their game
at Montreal on Friday night. Davis made his big league debut last
year, hitting .244 with five homers and 30 RBIs in 76 games but
he did not play in San Diego's 10-5 win over the Expos.

NEW YORK (AP) - Matt Clement picked up where he left off last season for San Diego. The New York Mets are still waiting for Mike Hampton and their big bats to get started. Clement kept New York's offense in a slumber, allowing one run in 6 2/3 effective innings, as the Padres beat the Mets, 8-5 ,on Thursday night to spoil Hampton's home debut. Hampton, the Mets' first legitimate ace since David Cone took over the title from Dwight Gooden in the early '90s, lost his second straight start. Hampton (0-2) allowed four runs -- two earned -- five hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. He was 22-4 last year for Houston. Ruben Rivera hit a two-run triple in the third inning and Ed Sprague hit a solo homer in the eighth for San Diego.
Padres' Hernandez likely headed to DL with strained groin
NEW YORK (AP) - San Diego catcher Carlos Hernandez left Thursday
night's 8-5 win against the New York Mets in the fourth inning
with a strained right groin and will probably be put on the
disabled list. "It looks like it will be 10-14 days," Padres
manager Bruce Bochy said. "There's a strong possibility we'll put
him on the DL. We'll evaluate him tomorrow and make a decision."
If Hernandez is put on the DL, the Padres will likely recall top
prospect Ben Davis from Triple-A. Hernandez injured himself on
the final play of the bottom of the third inning and will be
re-evaluated Friday. With runners on first and second and two
outs, Mike Piazza swung wildly at a third strike. The ball went
to the backstop and caromed back to Hernandez, who nipped Piazza
at first base to end the inning. Hernandez appeared to lose his
footing fielding the ricochet and injured himself.
Gwynn sits again
NEW YORK (AP) - Tony Gwynn missed his second straight game for
the San Diego Padres on Thursday night with a bruised right
elbow. Gwynn, hit by a pitch from Mets starter Al Leiter in the
Padres' season opener Monday, could return to the lineup as soon
as Friday in Montreal. "When my name is back in the lineup, ask
me how I feel," Gwynn said before the Padres' 8-5 win Thursday
against New York. "When I'm not in there, it doesn't matter."
Eric Owens started in Gwynn's place in right field for the second
straight game and went 2-for-4 with two runs, and RBI and a
triple. Gwynn took batting practice Thursday, but the Padres
feared he would have trouble extending his arm on his swing.
Gwynn, 18th on the career hits list with 3,067, made two trips to
the disabled list last year because of a strained calf and missed
44 games. Gwynn hit .338 last season, one point below his career
average.

NEW YORK (AP) - Woody Williams kept Mets hitters in a deep freeze by pitching six shutout innings and the San Diego Padres, minus injured Tony Gwynn, beat New York, 4-0, Wednesday night for their first win of the season. Gwynn sat out with a bruised right elbow. X-rays were negative, and the eight-time NL batting champion could be back in a day or two. Williams (1-0) and relievers Carlos Almanzar and Trevor Hoffman shut down a team that was hitting only .177 in its first three games. But Bobby Jones (0-1) struggled in his first start since last May 22, lasting just 2 2/3 innings and getting booed when he left trailing by four runs. Bret Boone hit an RBI double to key a three-run second and drew a bases-loaded walk in the third.
Gwynn out of lineup and day-to-day after X-rays negative
(AP) - Tony Gwynn was out of the lineup Wednesday night because
of an injured right elbow, but there was good news for the San
Diego star: X-rays were negative, meaning no trip to the disabled
list. "He could play in a day or two," Padres assistant trainer
Jim Daniel said. Gwynn had feared a broken bone after being hit
by a pitch from Al Leiter in Monday's opener against the New York
Mets. "If it's a hairline fracture, you're probably talking DL,
out for two weeks," the eight-time NL batting champion said.
X-rays taken at Shea Stadium, however, showed no crack. Gwynn
left the ballpark Monday with his arm in a sling. The Padres were
off Tuesday, and Gwynn's right arm was taped and bandaged
Wednesday. "I want to play. I didn't fly 3,000 miles to put on
the pom-poms," he said. Woody Williams pitched six shutout
innings and San Diego beat New York 4-0 Wednesday night for its
first win of the season.

Gwynn to be re-examined on Wednesday
(AP) - San Diego star Tony Gwynn, who might have a broken bone in
his right elbow, is scheduled to be re-examined on Wednesday.
Gwynn, an eight-time NL batting champion, spent Tuesday's off day
resting. He was hit by a pitch from Al Leiter leading off the
fourth inning of Monday's 2-1 loss to the New York Mets. Gwynn
remained in the game, and X-rays taken later were inconclusive
due to swelling. Trainer Todd Hutcheson said that if the swelling
goes down by Wednesday, the club should know more about the
injury. Even if there's no fracture, Gwynn could still miss the
rest of the Padres' six-game opening trip. Gwynn had hoped to
stay healthy this season after a nagging calf injury twice sent
him to the disabled list year, costing him 44 games and
interrupting his pursuit of 3,000 hits. Gwynn got the milestone
on Aug. 6 and now has 3,067, ranking him 18th on the all-time
list.
Padres give Bochy four-year extension
(AP) - Bruce Bochy, who has managed the San Diego Padres to two
division titles and a World Series in five seasons, agreed
Tuesday to a four-year contract extension through 2004, with an
option for 2005. Bochy, 44, will make $500,000 this season in the
final year of his current deal. He was believed to be seeking at
least $1 million a year. "I'm ecstatic," Bochy said in a
statement. "This is always what I've wanted. You can't put a
price tag on this -- to be exactly where you want to be, to live
in San Diego and work for the Padres. This is priceless. I
appreciate the long-term commitment." General manager Kevin
Towers has been a close friend of Bochy's since he served as
pitching coach under Bochy with Single-A Spokane in 1989.
"There's no other person in baseball I would rather have than
Bruce Bochy as my manager," Towers said. Bochy is the Padres'
winningest manager (409-384).

NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Bell hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning in his first game for the Mets at Shea Stadium and New York, behind a well-rested Al Leiter, beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 Monday. Leiter (1-0) didn't make the 7,200-mile trip from Port St. Lucie, Fla., to Tokyo for the season-opening two-game series against the Chicago Cubs and looked fresh because of it. The left-hander allowed one run, five hits and no walks in eight innings, striking out seven. He earned the win when Bell hit the first pitch he saw from Donne Wall (0-1) over the fence in left-center to break a 1-1 tie with two outs in the eighth. Armando Benitez pitched a perfect ninth for his first save. Padres starter Sterling Hitchcock allowed one run and three hits in 6 1/3 innings. Phil Nevin homered in the second for San Diego.
Padres' Gwynn might have broken bone near elbow
(AP) - Tony Gwynn was hit by a pitch on his right elbow Monday
and might have a broken bone. Preliminary X-rays after San
Diego's 2-1 opening day loss to the New York Mets showed that the
Padres star outfielder had a chip fracture near his elbow. "When
I got hit I just thought I would be sore a little bit," Gwynn
said. "They said go take X-rays. They think it is a chip
fracture. We'll see." Gwynn, 18th on the career list with 3,067
hits, is expected to miss the rest of the series against the
Mets. He underwent further X-rays later Monday night to determine
the severity of the injury, team spokesman Glenn Geffner said.
"It's frustrating because I worked really hard this winter
getting ready for the season," Gwynn said. Gwynn was hit by a
pitch from Al Leiter in the fourth inning and remained in the
game. Gwynn, 39, has a .339 career average in 17 seasons with the
Padres.

Gwynn's son decides to attend Dad's alma mater
(AP) - Less than a month after making a verbal commitment to play
baseball at Cal State Fullerton, Anthony Gwynn changed his mind
and has decided to attend his famous father's alma mater, San
Diego State. The Aztecs play their home games at Tony Gwynn
Stadium. "It's going to be a little weird standing in the
batter's box and seeing my dad's name on the outfield wall,"
Anthony Gwynn said. "There will be pressure, but I think I can
handle it." Like his father, Gwynn is a left-handed hitting
outfielder. A point guard, He'll also be invited to try out for
the basketball team as a walk-on. Tony Gwynn starred in baseball
and basketball at San Diego State from 1979-81 before being
drafted by the Padres. As the Aztecs' point guard, he set the
school's assists records that still stand. Tony Gwynn enters this
season with 3,067 hits, 18th on the all-time list.
