PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bobby Abreu's ninth-inning single over right fielder Vladimir Guerrero gave the Philadelphia Phillies a 5-4 win over the Montreal Expos on Sunday. Abreu, batting .343 overall, is 4-for-7 (.571) this season with four RBIs with runners in scoring position. Pinch-hitter Rob Ducey, batting for Scott Aldred (1-0), singled leading off the ninth and advanced on Doug Glanville's sacrifice. Ron Gant followed with an infield single, but Ducey couldn't advance, setting the stage for Abreu. Anthony Telford (2-1) fell behind in the count at 2-1 and threw a slider that Abreu lifted over Guerrero. Jose Vidro hit a solo homer and Orlando Cabrera hit a two-run shot for Montreal. Montreal starter Hideki Irabu struck out eight in six innings.

Montreal Expos at Philadelphia Phillies, Postponed
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Montreal Expos was postponed Saturday. The makeup date and time has not yet been determined. The Expos return to Philadelphia in September. The game was called after a delay of 1:50. No makeup date has been announced for the rainout, which was announced after a delay of 1:50. Both teams will keep their pitching rotations the same with Philadelphia's Andy Ashby going against Montreal's Hideki Irabu on Sunday.
Schilling throws five shutout innings in rehab start
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Curt Schilling threw five shutout innings
Saturday night in a rehab start for the Class-A Clearwater
Phillies. Schilling allowed one hit, one walk and hit a batter
against the Brevard County Manatees. He struck out seven in a
79-pitch outing. His fastball topped out at 94 mph. "It still is
just a matter of getting the innings in and today I would have
liked to stretch it out to six innings, but I threw to many
pitches early," Schilling said. "All my pitches were good today.
I didn't think I had exceptional play on my fastball but all my
other pitches felt really good." Schilling has one more start for
Clearwater on Friday against the St. Petersburg Devil Rays.

Montreal Expos 4, Philadelphia Phillies 0
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dustin Hermanson pitched his second career shutout and Vladimir Guerrero hit his fifth home run of the season as the Montreal Expos defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 Friday night. Hermanson (1-1) gave up six hits in his first shutout since July 15, 1997, against Florida. He allowed only one hit after the second inning. Hermanson struck out five and walked two in his first complete game since May 3, 1998, against Arizona. Chris Brock (0-2) struck out a career-high 11 in seven innings, but was hurt by three solo home runs. Guerrero hit a upper-deck home run to left-center field to give Montreal a 1-0 lead in the fourth, and the Expos had two flyouts to the warning track in the inning. Mike Mordecai homered in the fifth and Rondell White connected in the sixth.

New York Mets 2, Philadelphia Phillies 1
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mike Piazza's tiebreaking, RBI double with two outs in the ninth inning helped the New York Mets snap a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night. Jay Payton singled with one out off Scott Aldred (0-1) for his first career three-hit game. With two outs, Piazza hit a liner to left-center off a low-and-away slider by Amaury Telemaco. Payton barely beat Mickey Morandini's relay throw from left fielder Ron Gant to score the winning run. Dennis Cook (2-0) got Rico Brogna to pop out with two runners on in the eighth. Armando Benitez pitched the ninth for his third save. Rick Reed allowed one run and four hits in seven innings and drove in New York's first run with a sacrifice fly.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mike Hampton was knocked out with a bruised knee and swollen ERA, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Mets, 8-5, Wednesday night for their fifth straight victory over New York. The Mets lost their third straight overall and fifth in six games. In his shortest outing in two years, Hampton (0-3) gave up six runs, six hits and five walks in three innings. Struck in the right knee by Doug Glanville's liner in the third, he did not come out for the fourth. Hampton has a 6.56 ERA and 17 walks in 13 2/3 innings. Robert Person (1-0) continued to confound his former team, giving up two runs and three hits in seven innings. He retired his last 10 batters after Jay Payton's two-run homer in the fourth.
Mets claim Shumaker from Phillies
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Left-hander Anthony Shumaker was claimed by
the New York Mets off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies on
Wednesday and optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. Shumaker, 26, was 0-3
with a 5.96 ERA in eight games with the Phillies last season. He
has a 30-30 record with 18 saves and a 3.34 ERA in 189 minor
league games. The Phillies tried to pass Shumaker through waivers
in order to make room on the 40-man roster for Tomas Perez,
brought up when Mike Jackson went on the 15-day disabled list
last week. The Mets designated catcher Vance Wilson for
assignment to make room for Shumaker.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mike Lieberthal hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the fifth inning as the Philadelphia Phillies overcame a four-run deficit and beat the New York Mets 9-7 in their home opener Monday night. Phillies starter Paul Byrd, who got only two outs in his first start, allowed seven runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. Lieberthal's homer off Rich Rodriguez (0-1) capped a four-run fifth as the Phillies erased deficits of 4-0 and 7-5. Amaury Telemaco (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 hitless innings for the victory. Kirk Bullinger also retired all five batters he faced, and Wayne Gomes got four outs for his third save. Bobby Jones, who went only 2 2/3 innings in his first start, allowed seven runs -- six earned -- and six hits in four-plus innings.
Schilling throws four innings in rehab start
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Curt Schilling allowed two hits in four
shutout innings, pitching for Clearwater of the Single-A Florida
State League in an injury rehabiliation start Monday night.
Schilling struck out nine Daytona Cubs, throwing 63 pitches,
including 45 strikes. His fastball topped out at 94 mph. "I just
need to pitch and I am resigned to that fact," said Schilling,
expected to rejoin Philadelphia next month. "I feel better than I
did my last time (Thursday). My changeup is better. Everything is
better. I just can't get this over any faster than every five
days." Another Phillies pitcher on a rehab assignment, reliever
Jeff Brantley, followed Schilling and allowed one run and two
hits in two innings. Schilling is expected to start again
Saturday.

HOUSTON (AP) - Mickey Morandini's two-out RBI single in the eighth inning rallied the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Sunday. Jay Powell (0-1) walked Bobby Abreu to start the eighth but got the next two batters before walking Mike Lieberthal. Morandini followed with a single to center field and Abreu beat center fielder Roger Cedeno's throw to the plate. Steve Schrenk (1-1) got five outs for the win. The Astros loaded the bases in the eighth before Wayne Gomes got Daryle Ward to ground out. Gomes finished for his second save. Andy Ashby and Lieberthal drove in the other two runs for Philadelphia. Jeff Bagwell and Tim Bogar had sacrifice flies for Houston.

HOUSTON (AP) - Moises Alou hit a two-run single in the fifth inning and a solo homer in the seventh for his first RBIs since the 1998 season, leading the Houston Astros to an 8-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. Alou, who missed all of last season recovering from knee surgery, put the Astros ahead to stay 6-4 with his single off Kirk Bullinger. His first homer since Aug. 24, 1998, made it 8-5. Ken Caminiti hit a two-run homer off Chris Brock (0-1) in the third inning to put Houston up 4-2 and added a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Brock gave up six runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings. Mike Maddux (1-0) allowed one run in one inning to get the win. Billy Wagner pitched the ninth for his second save.

HOUSTON (AP) - Scott Rolen broke up a scoreless game with a sixth-inning home run, and Enron Field officially opened Friday night with the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Astros 4-1 in Houston's first outdoor home game since 1964. Ron Gant added a two-run homer off Doug Henry in the eighth for the Phillies, who avoided their first 0-4 start since 1987. Octavio Dotel (0-1) allowed only three hits until Rolen led off the seventh with a drive over the left-field scoreboard, his third home run of the season. Rico Brogna's double chased Dotel and Mickey Morandini's sacrifice fly off Doug Henry made it 2-0 for the Phillies. Randy Wolf (1-0) also allowed a leadoff homer in the seventh, a 408-foot drive to left by Richard Hidalgo.
Philadelphia reliever Jackson placed on DL
HOUSTON (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies reliever Mike Jackson was
placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a
right-shoulder strain. Jackson signed with Philadelphia in the
offseason after saving 79 games with Baltimore in the past two
seasons. Philadelphia recalled infielder Thomas Perez from
Reading of the Eastern League. Also, Phillies shortstop Desi
Relaford will be out two games because of a groin pull.

Arizona Diamondbacks 3, Philadelphia Phillies 2 (11)
PHOENIX (AP) - Lenny Harris had a big game Thursday night as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat Philadelphia 3-2 in 11 innings to complete a season-opening three-game sweep of the Phillies. Harris' broken-bat grounder with the bases loaded drove in the winning run. He also had an odd sacrifice fly that scored Steve Finley from second, beat out an infield chopper for a single and made two big defensive plays at third base. The defending NL West champions loaded the bases in the 11th when Steve Schrenk (0-1) walked Erubiel Durazo, Finley and Travis Lee with one out. Harris hit a slow grounder to second baseman Kevin Jordan, who tossed it to shortstop Alex Arias for the forceout. No one covered first in time. Jay Bell homered for Arizona and Russ Springer (1-0) pitched a scoreless 11th to get the victory.
Schilling pitches 3 2/3 innings in minor league opener
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Curt Schilling got to pitching on
opening day. Playing for Single-A Clearwater, the Philadelphia
Phillies ace allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings Thursday night
against the St. Petersburg Devil Rays in a Florida State League
opener. Schilling, who had surgery on his right shoulder Dec. 13,
threw 50 pitches in his minor league rehabilitation start. He
gave up three hits, walked none and struck out three. "I had real
good command and was throwing strikes early in the count," he
said. "But in the fourth inning, when I gave up the two runs, I
had a couple of situations to get strikeouts with two-strike
counts and didn't make good pitches." Schilling's fastball topped
out at 93 mph. Philadelphia opened its season Tuesday at Arizona
with Andy Ashby, pitching in Schilling's place, losing to the
Diamondbacks.

PHOENIX (AP) - Lenny Harris hit a grand slam during a six-run first inning and Mike Morgan got his first save in nine years as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 11-3, Wednesday night. Travis Lee added a solo shot for the Diamondbacks. Todd Stottlemyre (1-0), who worked out daily during the offseason to strengthen an unrepaired tear in his right rotator cuff, gave up three runs and six hits -- including Scott Rolen's second solo homer in two games -- in five innings. Morgan became the 25th major leaguer to play in four decades when he relieved starting the sixth. Philadelphia starter Paul Byrd (0-1) got just two outs, giving up six runs, three hits and four walks.

Arizona Diamondbacks 6, Philadelphia Phillies 4
PHOENIX (AP) - Randy Johnson is back at it. The NL Cy Young winner struck out 10 in 8 2/3 innings Tuesday night and the Arizona Diamondbacks opened defense of their NL West title with a 6-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Johnson (1-0) gave up four hits, including home runs by Scott Rolen and Desi Relaford. Johnson, who led the majors in complete games last season with 12, was pulled after 133 pitches with a 6-2 lead. But with closer Matt Mantei on the disabled list because of a sore shoulder, the Arizona bullpen struggled to get the last out. Russ Springer gave up a walk and an RBI single to Relaford. Dan Plesac took over and allowed an RBI single to pinch-hitter Bobby Abreu. Darren Holmes recorded the save. Steve Finley, Luis Gonzalez and Damian Miller hit home runs off Andy Ashby (0-1).

Schilling pitches in first game since September
(AP) - Philadelphia Phillies ace Curt Schilling threw 40 pitches
in a minor league game Sunday, starting for the first time in
nearly eight months after being sidelined for shoulder surgery.
Pitching for Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre against Double-A
Reading in Clearwater, Fla., Schilling allowed one unearned run
and one hit. He walked two and struck out one. "There were some
balls today I was trying to hop up but couldn't, I've just got to
get some feel back," he said. "I just need to get a feel for
being out there and throwing all my pitches. I wish this was in
the beginning of camp the way I feel now." Schilling underwent
surgery on his right shoulder on Dec. 13, the second time his
pitching arm has been operated on. Schilling will throw on the
side Tuesday, then start his rehab, with a 50-to-60 pitch start
for Class-A Clearwater on Thursday in St. Petersburg.
