CLEVELAND (AP) - Jim Thome's one-out homer into the Indians' bullpen followed Manny Ramirez's shot to deep center in the ninth inning off John Wetteland (0-1) on Sunday as Cleveland rallied to beat the Texas Rangers 2-1. The two drives -- the 201st career homers for both players -- helped Chuck Finley win his home debut for the Indians, who were held to two hits through eight innings. Despite striking out 13 and pitching a five-hitter, Finley (1-0) looked like he was going to be a hard-luck loser. But Ramirez and Thome gave Finley his first win with Cleveland and Indians rookie manager Charlie Manuel his first home win. Texas starter Esteban Loaiza pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings and struck out a career-high 10 for the Rangers.
Rangers' Greer has ankle surgery
DALLAS (AP) - Texas left fielder Rusty Greer had surgery Sunday
for bone chips in his right ankle, and can begin rehabilitation
Monday. Greer, placed on the disabled list Saturday retroactive
to April 13, is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks. Dr. Charles Cook
performed the surgery in Dallas. Greer will be in a walking cast
for about a week, but can begin rehabilitation on an exercise
bicycle Monday. Greer, bothered by the bone chips during spring
training, strained his left hamstring during batting practice
Thursday and was scratched from the lineup against the New York
Yankees. The Rangers figured Greer would be out about two weeks
because of the hamstring injury, and decided to go ahead with
ankle surgery. The bad ankle slowed Greer on the basepaths and
limiting mobility in the field. He was batting .240 over his
first 25 at-bats this season, well under his career average of
.309.

Texas Rangers 6, Cleveland Indians 4
CLEVELAND (AP) - Texas scored five runs off Bartolo Colon in the first inning, then survived a Cleveland rally highlighted by Jim Thome's 200th career home run as the Rangers beat the Indians 6-4 Saturday. Ivan Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Rangers. Colon (2-1) lasted just 3 1/3 innings, giving up six runs and nine hits. Rodriguez sparked the big first when he doubled off the right-field wall to score Chad Curtis, then scored on David Segui's single. Gabe Kapler singled home two runs and Luis Alicea tripled. Mark Clark (2-0) didn't allow a Cleveland batter to reach base until the fourth inning. Clark held the Indians to just one hit through 5 1/3 innings but then gave up four quick runs -- capped by Thome's three-run homer.
Rangers' Greer to have surgery on ankle
CLEVELAND (AP) - Rusty Greer will miss 4-to-6 weeks after the
Texas Rangers placed the outfielder on the 15-day disabled list
Saturday while he has surgery for bone spurs in his right ankle.
Greer strained his left hamstring Thursday during batting
practice, and was scratched from the lineup against the New York
Yankees. The Rangers figured Greer would be out about two weeks
because of the hamstring, and decided to go ahead with ankle
surgery. Greer has been bothered by that problem since spring
training. Greer will have surgery in Dallas on Sunday. Texas
placed Greer on the DL, retroactive to Thursday, before
Saturday's game at Cleveland. It's the first time he has been on
the disabled list since he broke into the major leagues in 1994.
Texas purchased Jason McDonald from Triple-A Oklahoma to replace
Greer, then designated pitcher Brian Sikorski for assignment.

Texas Rangers 7, Cleveland Indians 2
CLEVELAND (AP) - Rick Helling allowed four hits in eight innings Friday and David Segui, Rafael Palmeiro and Ivan Rodriguez all homered as the Texas Rangers soured opening day at Jacobs Field with a 7-2 win over the Cleveland Indians. Helling (2-0) gave up two runs and two hits in the first inning, but settled down and retired 14-of-15 before giving up a leadoff single to Sandy Alomar in the eighth. The Indians, who opened their 100th season by going 7-2 on a nine-game road trip, had their winning streak snapped at six. Omar Vizquel hit a two-run homer for the Indians. Indians starter Dave Burba (1-1) fell behind 3-0 in the first inning when Segui connected for a two-run homer and was gone in the fifth after Palmeiro homered and Segui doubled off the top of the wall. Burba gave up six runs and nine hits in four-plus innings.

New York Yankees 5, Texas Rangers 1
NEW YORK (AP) - Orlando Hernandez shut down Texas on three singles for eight innings and Jorge Posada hit a tiebreaking triple with the bases loaded, leading the New York Yankees past the Rangers 5-1 on Thursday night. The Yankees, who have won nine straight playoff games against Texas on their way to three World Series titles since 1996, completed a two-game sweep. New York made it a rough homecoming for Kenny Rogers (1-2), who gave up eight hits in Texas' first complete game this year. Back at Yankee Stadium for the first time since pitching in pinstripes in 1997, he walked two in the sixth to set up Posada's hit. Hernandez (2-0) struck out four, walked two and lowered his ERA to 1.13 and the only run he allowed was unearned.

New York Yankees 8, Texas Rangers 6
NEW YORK (AP) - Tino Martinez's two-run triple in the seventh inning carried the New York Yankees over the Texas Rangers 8-6 Wednesday in their 2000 home opener. The Yankees rallied in the seventh inning after third baseman Wilson Delgado's throwing error gave the Rangers a 6-5 lead. Paul O'Neill and Bernie Williams, whose three-run homer gave the Yankees a 4-2 lead in the fifth, led off the seventh with singles off Mike Munoz (0-1). Martinez then hit a long drive to right-center for his third hit of the game, scoring both runners. Jeff Nelson (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win and Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth for his fourth save. The day included the Yankees raising their record 25th World Series flag before the game.

Texas Rangers 7, Toronto Blue Jays 5
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rick Helling rebounded from a rocky first start with six solid innings and David Segui hit a go-ahead single, leading the Texas Rangers to a 7-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. Helling (1-0) got off to another shaky start by giving up a two-run double to Carlos Delgado in the first inning. But he didn't allow another runner past second until the fifth, when an error by Luis Alicea enabled Homer Bush to score from first, tying it at 3. Texas regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Segui, who was acquired from Toronto in a three-way trade in March, hit a two-out single up the middle off Roy Halladay (1-1) to drive in Royce Clayton. Helling ended a career-worst four-game losing streak.

Toronto Blue Jays 4, Texas Rangers 0
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - David Wells pitched the first complete-game shutout in the majors this season, tossing a nine-hitter Saturday night as the Toronto Blue Jays snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory over Texas. Rangers starter Kenny Rogers had his 19-game home winning streak snapped. Rogers' (1-1) streak was the third-longest in major league history, dating to June 28, 1997, when he was with the New York Yankees. He also pitched for Oakland and the New York Mets in the streak before winning No. 19 on Monday for the Rangers. Wells (1-0) allowed eight hits and one walk and didn't allow a runner past second base in an efficient 89-pitch outing. Craig Grebeck went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer.

Texas Rangers 11, Toronto Blue Jays 5
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Royce Clayton hit two home runs and Ivan Rodriguez, Ruben Mateo and Rusty Greer also homered for Texas as the Rangers beat Toronto 11-5 on Friday night. Mark Clark (1-0) won for the first time since May 24, allowing four runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He missed the final 2 1/2 months of last season because of a torn ligament in his right elbow. Tony Batista hit his fourth homer for the Blue Jays, who lost their third in a row. Jose Cruz Jr. also homered for Toronto. Toronto took a 4-0 in the second before Texas's comeback began in the third against Frank Castillo (0-1). Frank Catalanotto singled, Tom Evans walked and Clayton hit his first homer to make it 4-3. The Rangers went ahead for good with a two-run fourth.

Chicago White Sox 6, Texas Rangers 2
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Ray Durham homered on the first pitch of the game and Frank Thomas and Carlos Lee also connected as the as the Chicago White Sox beat Texas, 6-2, on Thursday night. James Baldwin (1-0) retired the first 13 batters and allowed two runs and six hits in eight innings. Durham hit Esteban Loaiza's first pitch into the right-field seats to set a White Sox record with his 10th leadoff homer. Tim Raines had nine leadoff homers for Chicago. Lee hit a three-run shot in the fourth to give Chicago a 4-0 lead, and Thomas made it 5-0 in the fifth with his first homer of the year. Thomas was 3-for-4. Loaiza (0-1) allowed 10 hits and all six runs in 8 1/3 innings. Frank Catalanotto and Tom Evans drove in runs for the Rangers.

Chicago White Sox 12, Texas Rangers 8
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Reliever Sean Lowe stopped a big Texas rally, then Chris Singleton began a five-run ninth inning with a tiebreaking homer as the Chicago White Sox beat the Rangers 12-8 Wednesday. Lowe took over in the fifth after starter Jim Parque gave up five runs, turning a 7-1 Chicago lead into a close game. The first two batters reached, then Lowe got a strikeout and a double play. He struck out the side in the sixth. Keith Foulke (1-0) got the win, though David Segui scored an unearned run off him in the eighth to tie it at 7-7. Singleton wasted no time regaining the lead, pulling the first pitch he saw from Jeff Zimmerman (0-1) into the right-field seats. Frank Thomas then added a two-run double and Paul Konerko a run-scoring single.

Texas Rangers 12, Chicago White Sox 8
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Frank Catalanotto sparked a seven-run rally with a game-tying homer and Francisco Cordero (1-0) picked up the win as the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox 12-8 Tuesday night. Catalanotto went 2-for-4 for Texas, which has scored 22 runs in its first two games. Rafael Palmeiro got it started with a three-run homer into the upper deck in right. Texas starter Rick Helling couldn't hold it, though, allowing four runs in the fourth. Chicago's Kip Wells was knocked out in the fifth on an RBI single by Ruben Mateo that closed Texas to 5-4. An RBI single by Frank Thomas in the sixth gave the Sox a two-run cushion. Catalanotto then homered off Bill Simas (0-1) to tie the game at 6. Rusty Greer put Texas ahead with a bloop RBI double into left. Carlos Lee homered for Chicago.

Texas Rangers 10, Chicago White Sox 4
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers opened the post-Juan Gonzalez era with quite a bang. Gabe Kapler homered in his first two at-bats for Texas and AL MVP Ivan Rodriguez drove in five runs with two more homers in a 10-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox in the season opener Monday. Texas starter Kenny Rogers (1-0) kept the ball down, coaxing most of his outs on ground balls -- including four double plays -- and allowed one run in eight innings. Chicago starter Mike Sirotka (0-1) allowed seven runs -- six earned -- in 4 1/3 innings. Kapler, acquired in the trade that sent two-time AL MVP Gonzalez to Detroit, was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. The White Sox scored three times in the ninth off three relievers.

Rangers place lefty Thompson on disabled list
(AP) - Left-hander Justin Thompson was put on the 15-day disabled
list by the Texas Rangers on Sunday as he continues to mend from
a torn labrum in his left shoulder, a move retroactive to March
25. Thompson, part of a nine-player trade that sent slugger Juan
Gonzalez to Detroit in November, was 9-11 with 5.11 ERA in 24
starts with the Tigers last year. Rehab from his Aug. 16 surgery
kept him from pitching in any major league spring training games
but did pitch in two minor league games. By placing Thompson on
the disabled list, the Rangers have reached a 25-man roster.
