The Coach

GLENN HODDLE was not the English FA's first choice when they were looking to replace Terry Venables as England coach--but few would argue against him being the perfect choice now.  England's yougest ever coach, he was only 38 when he started the job after Euro '96.  Hoddle actually played in the same England team as Tony Adams, Gary Pallister and Stuart Pearce.  His own playing career, which spanned 20 years at Tottenham, Monaco, Swindon and Chealsea, only ended two years ago.  Hoddle played for England 53 times between 1979 and 1988 and has made an excellent start as coach, guiding England into the finals for the first time since 1990 and losing only two of his opening 14 games, to World champions Brazil and 1994 World Cup runners-up Itally.  A born-again Christian, his private life recently made the front page headlines when he and his wife of 18 years announced they were divorcing.
