The Coach

BERTI VOGTS made 96 appearances for West Germany and was part of the winning 1974 World Cup team alongside Franz Beckenbauer, his predecessor as a national coach.  He also shone at club level with Borussia Moenchengladbach, winning the UEFA Cup in 1975.  He was Beckenbauer's coaching lieutenant and took over from "Der Kaiser" after Germany's triumph in the 1990 World Cup in Italy.  Often criticised for keeping his faith in talented but ageing players rather than picking new faces, he nevertheless led his team to victory in the 1996 European championship in England.  Married to Monika since 1979, he has a nine-year old son called Justin and a long contract which could see him stay as German coach for many years yet.  If Germany win inFrance, he would become the third man to have won World Cup both as a player and a coach after Beckenbauer and Brazillian Mario Zagallo.
