Coach
RENE SIMOES, a Brazelian,
is a formidable figure of authority in dark glasses and baseball cap.
He has led the national team since 1994 with remarkable success.
Simoes, 51, had the brainwave to call in the help of four professionals
in the English league with Jamican origins for the qualifying campaign.
The "Reggae Boys" reached France '98 by qualifying firstly from the
preliminary stages and then from the final qualifing rounds playing a total
of 20 matches. In true Brazilian fashion, Simoes' team plays a stubbornly
offensive game, in a 3-5-2 formation. The Brazilian has coached portuguesa,
Victoria Guimaraes and the Brazilian under-20 team.
