The Coach

PAULO CESAR CARPEGIANI is a Brazilian who has become a national hero in an adopted land.  Carpegiani, 48, is an advocate of attacking football.  He turned a disorganised and discredited team into a dyanmic force by leading them to the World Cup finals for the fifth time.  He played first for Porto Alegre and then Flamengo; he was also a member of the Brazillian 1974 World Cup team.  His coaching career began at Flamengo where his side won the Brazillian League and went to the World Club Championship final in 1981.  During the World Cup campaign, Carpegiani rejected an offer to coach Flamengo, which would given him a three-fold increasse in his salary.
