The
Coach
Coach ANGHEL IORDANESCU,
47, was the right man for the "golden generation" of Romania's national
team. He was appointed in September 1993 and has produced an impressive
record -- 29 victories in 47 official games and friendlies.
He guided what has clearly been the most illustrious peridod of the Romanian
national team, including a quarter-final appearence in the 1994 World Cup
finals. Determined to make up for the team's poor performances at
the 1996 European finals in England -- one goal in three losses -- he signed
an unusual 10-month contract with the Romanian Soccer Federation for a
more $100,000. He is also an unusual man among the brethren of soccer
coaches. Annoyed by what he believed the wholesale rigging of matches
in the Romanian League, he resigned as national coach in March 1996, only
to be talked back into the job when he was given assurances the matter
was being officially dealth with. He also holds the army rank of
general after taking Romania into the last eight in USA '94.
