The Coach

It's certain CRAIG BROWN will not do in 1998 what Ally McLeod did in 1978.  McLeod took a Scotland squad to the World Cup finals in Argentina promising his soccer-mad nation they were good enough to win the World Cup.  They were knocked out in the first round.  Brown, 57, has seen enough in his four years as national coach to know what his team can achieve in France.  And to become the first coach to see Scotland past the first round would represent a degree of success for him.  They have never been past the first stage in their seven previous final appearances.  Brown played for Scotland at schoolboy, youth and junior levels and spent his career at Rangers, Dundee -- where he won a league championship medal in 1962 -- and falkirk.  A knee injury cut short his playing career and he pursued a career in education before returning to football in 1974 as Motherwell's assistant manager.
