The Coach

French PHILIPPE TROUSSIER took charge of the teamf only on March 1, replacing Clive Barker who quit after leading South Africa to victory in the African national championships in 1996 and qualification to the World Cup.  Trousier who was sacked by Nigeria in September last year took charge temporarily of Birkina Faso and led them to the semi-finals of the 1998 African championships.  "I will train South Africa in my own way with planning and method.  South Africa have great potential and it's a young team with talent."  Trousier, like others to make their name in Africa, was not an outstanding player and is not that well known in his native France.  He is known as the "White Magician" in Ivory Coast for taking top club ASEC Mimosas through 101 matches and three seasons without losing a match.
