The Coach

STEVE SAMPSON has proved a worthy successor to Bora Milutinovic as the United States soccer coach as he his led country to the 1998 finals in confident style.  He was an assistant to Milutinovic who guidedthe Americans into the second round of the 1994 World Cup, where they lost 1-0 to eventual champions Brazil.  Sampson took over in 1995when Milutinovic quit to take over as Mexico's coach before becoming coach of Nigeria.  Sampson, 40 a college player who became a successful college coach, hit the ground running as he led the United States to a surprise semifinal berth in the 1995 Copa American with victories over Chile, Argentina and Mexico.
