The Coach

Coach SLOBODAN SANTRAC came in for plenty for criticism after Yugoslavia lost 2-0 to Spain during their World Cup qualifying campaign for playing too many older, oveseas based players.  But he weathered the storm, saw his side score an aggregate 12-1 victory over Hungary in the play-offs and has steered them back into the World Cup finals for the first time since 1990.  Born on July 1,1946, Santrac, a free-scoring striker, began his first division career with OFK Belgrade in 1965 and stayed with them until a move to Grasshoppers in Zurich in 1974.  He reurned to OFK in 1976 and played until 1983, ending his career with Galenika Belgrade.  He finish third in the European goal scoring list and won the "Bronze Boot" in the 1971-72 season and is the all-time top scorer in the Yugoslav first division with a career record of 218 goals.  He succeeded lvica as Yugoslav coach on December 20, 1994 and three days later Yugoslavia played their first post-sanctions match against Brazil in Porto Allegre which Brazil won 2-0.
