Welcome to Sapalei page - "Home Sweet Home"... This is my first ever web page. I had written this to pay tribute to my home land.

Let me take you to Sapalei...
Sapalei is my village's name and it is located in the Western Province of the little nation called Solomon Islands. This is in the South Pacific. It is located at the northern end of the island called Vellalavella.
The village is situated on a ridge which extends out into the sea. The ridge is quite high, about 20 meters therefore it makes it difficult to live there as you would always have to climb that steep ridge before reaching where the villagers live.
The village itself is small, consisting of five extended families which have their houses biult along this steep, high and narrow ridge.
The population is up to 50 and most of the villagers are youths and little children who used to go to school in different places, which makes the place empty when they (children) are off to school.
But this is where my heart belong, and it's the place that I would always want to be. Welcome to Sapalei.

The Citizens

Their are five extended families in that village and they are:
- Peter Mau family
- Peter Lato family
- Orepala Kuma family
- Zebedee Zarasope family
- Rore family
These are the families currently living in Sapalei and are all related. Note that there are other extended family which are from this place but have relocated themselves else where.
The families have a very close tie together. They share there catch, they share their garden produce and they even share cooked foods with each other. One thing remarkable about them is that, after every Sabbath church services they used to have lunch together at the end point of the ridge, where you could feel the cool breeze blowing from the east and you could looking out into the ocean, watching ship or canoe passing by.
The houses that the people live in are traditionally biult using bush materials. However, as time changes, people also start biulding permanent houses and so now you will find a couple of permanently biult houses.
They are subsistant farmers and depend mainly on their produce. They also depend on the fish.

This is how simple their life style is.

Youths of Sapalei
The youths of Sapalei are as regular youths. They are inter-related and thus their ties are strong. They work together and help one another. For example, if someone wants to sell his copra produce, the whole village would help him.
In the same way they play together. Although their village is located on top a ridge, they cleared an area where they set up a volleyball pitch and started playing. Boys and girls all enjoy playing.
At the end of Dec 1999, a soccer tournament was held at Dovele a nearby SDA village and a team from Sapalei also attended. They came through to the quarter finals, but unfortunately they lost to the team that won the final and eventually got the first price.
However, some of there players are playing else where. Like Dinda, who is playing soccer in New Zealand. Pesiopala is also playing for the Vellalavella soccer squad for this upcoming Western Cup. Conrad is currently playing in Papua New Giunea LAHI league (one of the strongest league in that country. Others also play soccer as a recreation sport else where.

Sapalei also has many of it's students studying within the country and abroad. Their are a couple of them satudying in New Zealand. Namely Dinda Peter and Narko Tutuo. In Australia, Alaric and a couple in Papua New Giunea, namely Vernon, Bevan, Kelly, Conrad and Marcia. In Fiji, Carlvin and Bryce. Others namely Bridget, Adrina, Hine are studying at Vorabare Junior Adventist High School. Leslie is studying Kukudu and Letitia is studying in KGVI school doing her foundation year.

These are the fruits that this little village bear in terms of education.
Finally I wish my village "Sapalei" all the best and hope to see you there (if you ever come to Sapalei).
I might put some photos of my village on this page, as soon as I have the photos. If you have a photo of this place, please send them to my e-mail address.
