Germany vs. Japan

In the first round of the Fed Cup, Germany takes on Japan. Germany is expected to advance without any trouble. However, Anke Huber loses to Kimiko Date in the first rubber. Germany is looking to be in trouble, but Steffi Graf comes to the rescue, beating Naoko Sawamatsu 6-1, 6-3 in her match. The tie turns the following day, when the 2 number ones, Graf and Date, meet in a marathon clash. Steffi loses the first set in a tie-break, before going on to take the second 6-3. Steffi holds match points in the final set, but cannot convert them. Eventually, Date scores an epic victory, beating Steffi, 7-6, 3-6, 12-10.

Anke Huber then beats Sawamatsu in three sets to level the tie at 2-2, but Steffi and Anke are beaten in the doubles, and Japan seals victory 3-2.
