Sparkassen Cup - Leipzig, Germany
In September, Steffi takes part in the Sparkassen Cup in Leipzig, Germany. Steffi had last won the title in 1993, and now she is attempting to do it again. In Round 2, Steffi, seeded No. 1(of course), takes on American, Kimberley Po. Steffi quickly dismisses the challenge of the American, as she completely destroys her 6-0, 6-1.
In the quarterfinals, Steffi once again faces old foe, Austrian, Judith Wiesner. Steffi is 10-0 against Wiesner, and, on this day, she makes it 11-0, but she has to work very hard for her victory. Wiesner displays great shots, and, aided by Steffi's errors, she takes the first set 6-1. Steffi then makes a concerted effort to come back, and she takes the second set 6-3. In thr 3rd, with momentum on her side, Steffi continues to dominate Wiesner. Eventually the great German triumphs, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Steffi is due to face fellow German, Anke Huber in the semifinals. However, her left knee is bothering her, and she is forced to default.

OCTOBER
Steffi is sidelined for the duration of October, due to her knee injury. Steffi does go to Moscow though, and she presents the Moscow tournament trophy to Conchita Martinez.
