GET A SKATE PARK

If you have to travel far to a skate park, and you are getting bored of traveling to and from, well here are some suggestions that might help you.

WHAT IS THE TARGET?
To establish a long-term skate park. Local authorities must be persuaded that they are not going to make the same mistake again, as in the 1970's, when there was a boom in skateboarding. Many skateparks were built and when skateboarding went out of fashion the skate parks went out of business and lost a lot of money.
LOCATION
This a big problem. Things you have to come up with are such things as:-
Easy access by public transport.
A safe route and secure parking for bikes.
Adequate onsite parking.
A location which is attractive (IF POSSIBLE).
People-friendly area which includes shops, cafes and other recreational facilities.

WHAT TYPE OF SKATEPARK DO YOU NEED?
OUTDOOR:-  Often local owned by the authority and offer free use for skaters. While sites can be easy to find, they require major funding for weatherproof constructive followed by minor funding for maintenance. There may be objections to an unsupervised facility that is open to potential litigation from injured parties, and lack of use due to poor weather conditions.
INDOOR:- Need to charge for their facilities due to their much higher running costs. With the costs of commercial property too high to be a realistic option, the most likely facility could be a disused warehouse or similar large building which is provided by the local authority foe a commercial management.

WHAT SCALE IS REQUIRED?
A minimum of 15,000 square feet would allow for:-
A smooth, hard area fitted with street_style obstacles and mini ramps.
A large area fitted with bowls and more advanced ramps for the better skaters.
Adequate spectator space.

WHAT AMENITIES ARE REQUIRED?
All skaters should be able to make positive and productive use of the facility and feel welcome there. Desirable amenities should include:-
Workshop and office.
Car parking area.
Toilet, changing room and showers.
Hire and equipment shop.
Rest area and games room.
Cafe/restaurant.
First Aid facility.
WHY DOES YOUR AREA
NEED A SKATE PARK?
A permanent skate park provides a social and recreational focus for young people whose only alternative is to skate on the streets.
Without  such a focal point, some young people will turn to crime.
When aggressive skates take to the streets, it can involve unintentional and innocent vandalism to property and danger to pedestrians, but there may be no alternative place to skate.
A skate park can help to educate and influence the behavior of young people. It can allow them to take more control of their sport land learn to respect their environment.
