FIELDING TIPS
Fielding Tips
Stay in Front of the Ball
When many kids first start playing baseball they might be scared of the ball ,
but as they get older they have to overcome that fear. One good way to do
this is to hit tons of ground balls to a fielder and have them square up to
the ball while they're fielding it. Instead of them fielding it to the side
of their body where they likely to miss it. Tell them that the ball can take
some bad hops, and sometimes the ball will hit them, but it doesn't hurt but
for just a second, kind of like getting a shot. When you stay in front of
the ball more than likely you'll be a great fielder.
Keep Your Glove Down
Another thing that goes hand-in-hand with staying in front of the ball, is keeping
your glove down. Think about it, if your staying in front of the ball, and your
glove is off the ground, then almost everytime you will miss the ball. It doesn't
do any good to stay in front of the ball if your glove's in the air. One thing
that prevents people from keeping their glove on the ground, is that they wait
back too long on the ball. On a ground ball you've got to charge. When you
stay back there waiting on a ground ball then your body gets tired of waiting, and
just before the ball gets there you lift your glove off the ground, and the ball
goes right under it. So keep your glove down and charge the ball.
