Here in 1999, we are going into the season with something that we haven't
had in a long time--a quarterback who has been here for more than two years. Though questions still linger around the head of Elvis Grbac, I still say to all loyal and true fans:
give him one more chance. When he came on in 1997, no one expected big things, but in his playing time he delivered us an 8-2 record and a trip to the playoffs during his starts, and who
can forget that last minute comeback in Oakland that mirrored something out of the pages of Elway and Marino? He played well, he played as a leader, and then came 1998. He looked sharpe that first game,
when he played, but by the time he came back the running game had fallen to pieces and nothing would click. During the time he played up until those last two games, he looked like he could pass for a younger sister
of Steve Bono. The fans became agitated and they let him know. Eventually it landed him on the bench and in a game of "Guess who the Quarterback will be" lead by Marty. He came back in after Gannon went down in the loss to the Giants,
and he lead the team to its only score. A week later at Oakland, he came out looking pathetic, but refused to give up, and seemed to return to his 1997 form. This off-season, he's trained, he's conditioned and he's listened to the advice of
others all in hopes of improving.
____What we got out of Elvis these past two years is much like that of Kordell Stewart in Pittsburgh--one good year and one bad year. What happened to this team last year was not completely the fault of #11 turn 18,
and thus as Kordell is deserving of another chance out East, so is Elvis here. This is his make or break season, it's time for him to put up or go back to being a back-up. However, with the aid of a running game, something that didn't develop until
to late into the season last year, and the further development of Tony Gonzalez, it should help Elvis exceed his 1997 form and possibly even earn him a trip to the Pro Bowl.
____I look for a big year out of Elvis, 3250 yards (at least) 22 Touch Downs (at least) and 11 interceptions (at most), as well as at least a 13 game season in which he helps guide the Chiefs to a 12-4 record and a return to the playoffs.
