(Boston, MA) - Week had was impressive for the Sox as they sit atop the very tough AL East Division with a 5-1 record. Here's how week 1 went :

Day # Score Player of Game Game Review

Bryan Ward

After an impressive Spring Training, Bryan Ward showed why the Red Sox have so much faith in him this season. After Ace Jeff Suppan was driven from the game early, Ward came in and pitching 5 1/3 innings allowing only 1 run. Rookie Travis Lee sparked the offense going 2-4 with a HR and 4 RBIs.

2 BoSox 3
NY 1

Jason Isringhausen

What a start for P Jason Isringhausen. After spending most of last season on the DL, Jason pitched 7 2/3 Innings allowing only 1 run & 4 hits. He struck out 10 and walked noone ! The Sox scored 3 in the first and that's all Jason would need.

3 Red Sox 0
NY 3

Carlos Baerga

John Smiley would be too much for the Sox today. Aaron Sele pitched a good game in his opener, but it wouldn't be enough. Carlos Baerga was the only BoSox to get 2 hits in the game (Sox had 6 hits total). Sox stranded 9 baserunners in the loss.

4 Red Sox 5

Mike Becker

Mike Becker pitched 7 great innings giving up only 1 run for the win. Jeromy Burnitz would go 2-3 before having to leave the game with a hyper-extended knee. His replacement Kimera Bartee would also enjoy a 1-1 appearance with an RBI. Travis Lee joined in with a HR & 2 RBIs of his own. Steve Carlton would also leave the game injuried for Detroit.

Alex Fernandez

Alex Fernandez pitches 7 1/3 innings of scoreless ball allowing only 4 hits. Greg Maddux was injuried in the 3rd inning driving him from the game. The offense was a 1 inning barrage as the Sox pushed 6 accross in the 7th. John Valentin had the first BoSox 3 hit game in a 3-4 appearance. O'Leary and Dye each chipped in with a pair of RBIs.

Jeff Suppan Travis Lee

Jeff Suppan rebounded nicely after his opening day struggles. He pitched 7 1/3 inning of 4 hit ball. Travis Lee splits the Player of the Game honors with Suppan with his 6th inning RBI single of Rick Aguilera to score newly acquired SS Benji Gil for what would turn out to be the game-winner.

Week in Review :

The Red Sox hitting struggled some this week, but the pitching has started off right where it left off. This week saw some surprises as the bullpen held up nicely against some of the best the AL East has to offer. On the offensive side, Travis Lee has started his first Full season with the Big team and has taken full advantage with 7 RBIs this week. John Valentin, usually a slow starter, hit .375 for the week.

Of the newly acquired -- Ed Sprague struggled going only 2-18. Phil Nevin hit .261 for the week. Benji Gil was 3-9 with a double. And Rodney Myers pitched 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief -- while walking 1.
