SAN DIEGO - Just 24 hours before the Ammateur Draft the Houston
Astros traded to get the number two pick in the draft, and it
paid off. The Astros traded dominate closer Billy Wagner in
exchange for the #2 pick in the Ammateur draft. The Astros
would not reveal who they were going after until they picked
him. The Philadelphia Phillies had the first pick overall and
they chose pitcher Orlando Hernandez. Houston's own Tim Riggoni
has an interview:
TR, "So, Orlando Hernandez, did you expect to go number one
overall in the draft?"
OH, "Actually, I didn't know what to expect. I came in knowing
I was going to be picked, but number one was not a
very high thought in my mind."
TR, "So, what do you hope to accomplish on this Phillies team?"
OH, "I hope to get this team ready for playoff contention. I am
going to go in and contribute anyway possible."
TR, "Where do you see this team in a few years?"
OH, "I see us in the playoffs hopefully. We have great potential
and if we use our talents right, we will come out on top.
We got some tough teams, the Expos and the Braves in our
division too."
As for who the Houston Astros picked? They got the man every
manager thought was going first, Kevin Millwood. Houston's own
Geoff Proehl got an exclusive interview with Kevin Millwood:
GP, "So, welcome to the team Kevin, how does it feel to go to
Houston?"
KM, "Well, it freels great to come to a contending team. But
with the pitching staff of Randy Johnson the Big Unit,
Shane Reynolds the fan favorite, Zeke Cain the Franchise
Player, Chris Seelbach looking to become the rookie of
the year, and Luis Andujar just got signed to a big deal,
I don't know where I'll fit in!"
GP, "I'm sure they'll find room for you sometime in the near
future. Where do you see yourself and the Astros 3 years
down the line?"
KM, "Well, I see us in the playoffs or at least in the playoff
hunt. We got a lot of young players and I'm real excited
about entering the team."
The Astros traded the 16th pick for the White Sox 19th overall
because they were not raedy at the time their pick came
up. The Astros selected left handed pitcher Jeff Wallace
with that pick. they also chose catcher Guillermo Garcia
at 44th pick, and Centerfielder Ryan Christenson at 72 pick.
