Dennis Irwin is the unsung hero at Old Trafford. He is one of the best defenders Manchester United have EVER had.

Alex Ferguson signed him for a fee of £625,000 in 1990. Were he was bought from Oldham Athletic. Fergi knew he was buying a very good defender as he had 167 appearances for Oldham and 77 for Leeds.

His debut was in August 1990, when united won 2-0 against Coventry City.

Dennis plays on either side of defence as he has two great feet. But over the past seasons at Old Trafford he has put his name on the left-back position. With over 300 appearances for the red devils now it seems that Dennis Irwin is going to be around for another 10 years. He is a very good international who has played lots of times for his country, the Republic of Ireland, including joining team mate Roy Keane in the 1994 world cup finals.

He makes very few mistakes and has a cool head on his shoulders, and being a great tackler and leader is just the icing on the cake for such a good player.

At the moment he takes Manchester United penalties, and has also been captain of the team quite a lot of times.

He was there when the Man Utd 90's reign started, being part of the great defence which included Parker, Bruce, and Pallister, and he is going to be there for a while longer.
