Henning Berg hasn't been at United for long and we are still waiting for him to make a massive impact. Alex Ferguson spent a massive £5 million on the Norwegian defender from neighbours Blackburn.

In his first season of 97/98 Berg started a massive 29 games scoring two goals in the process. His league debut came against Tottenham at White Hart Lane and since then he has been a regular. But he has had to fight for his place, with the likes of Gary and Phil Neville, Irwin, Pallister, and Johnsen breathing down his neck. His first goal came against Everton on the 26th of December 1997. United ending up 2-0 winners.

Before coming to Old Trafford he was an established international, and has been one since. He helped Norway into the 2nd round of the World cup and alongside Ronny Johnsen at the back he felt like he was at home.

People have criticized Ferguson on spending a huge price for a defender BUT to transfer fees at the moment £5 million seems to be a reasonable price. As I have said before he has to prove himself, until he can become a remembered player at Old Trafford but before that happens he will have to be part of a few championship and cup victories.

In the 1998/99 season he will have some competition, with the arrival of Jaap Stam and the very good form of Ronny Johnsen. But he will surely get a number of appearances as he can always add that little extra strength at the back. His pace and heading ability will help the defense and with the added bonus of his very good ball control and vision he will provide Alex with an extra selection problem for some years to come.
