LATEST NEWS FROM OLD TRAFFORD

LAST UPDATED..24st October 1998

Manchester United is being bought by media tycoon Rupert Murdoch for a massive £623.4 million.

The BskyB owner will buy the club very soon and who knows what will happen. United could be on Sky every week but at pay-per-view. Whatever happens there is a lot of United fans who are not happy to see the deal go through, but there is a minority who are happy.

Let's just wait and see what happens. But lets hope that if Murdoch does take charge he focuses more on the football than the commercial side of the game! There are a few rival bids and at the moment no one knows what is going to happen.

DERBY 1- MANCHESTER UNITED 1

A goal four minutes from time secured United a point out of a disappointing game. It was Jordi Cruyff who scored the goal, after United went down late in the second half to Derby.

For United they should be winning games like these to be looking as title contenders, BUT Derby did put up a good fight.

United had a strong side out, consisting of Schmeichel, Giggs, Beckham, Keane, Butt, Yorke, Cole and Stam. But the surprising young talent from the last two games, Wes Brown carried on with his good performances and is starting to prove that he is going to be a big talent and favourite at Old Trafford.

BRONDBY 2- MANCHESTER UNITED 6

Manchester United cruised to the top of group D with a 6-2 away win against Brondby. United outplayed and outclassed the Danish side who now find themselves at the bottom of the group.

It all started from a Ryan Giggs goal, scored after less than 2 minutes, then the goals flew in form then on. Ryan Giggs got his second of the game, that puts Giggs on 8 European goals (equal to George Best). Then a very good goal from Andy Cole, combining with Yorke put United 3-0 up after less then 30 minutes played. Brondby scored before half time to end the half 3-1 United.

United carried on in the second half as they started in the first, goals from Keane, Yorke and Solskjaer securing it at 6-1 before Brondby got a late consolation goal.

This United win is the BIGGEST EVER AWAY WIN FOR ANY CLUB PLAYING IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE. Well Done lads!

United now top the league and their next game is Brondby at Old Trafford on November 4th.

OLD NEWS THIS SEASON

MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE FINALLY BOUGHT DWIGHT YORKE.

On his way to Old Trafford!

Aston Villa have accepted Manchester Uniteds £12million bid for 26 year-old Dwight Yorke. The deal is a great boost to Uniteds European expectations as he is on target to sign before the 12pm deadline on the 20th August.

Doug Ellis said he let the player go because the player was so keen to leave the club. The player just has to agree personal terms and United look like landing the Trinidad and Tobago star.

The transfer has been on and off for the past month but it looks like Villa have give in and dropped their £16 million asking by a huge £4 million. Dwight Yorke will be happy about the move and has insisted all along that he would like a move to Old Trafford.

This transfer again is an Old Trafford record, and slashes the price of £10.75 million Jaap Stam. The signature will bring Alex Ferguson's spending to £27 million in the space of only 2 months.

Yorke will sign a contract for about 4 years and will receive £22,000 a week. Villa had offered the player a 5 year contract with his wages higher than what United are paying him, but he has already said "I want to be successful and win things in my career".

SOLSKJAER'S NOT ON HIS WAY TO SPURS!

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is staying at Manchester United. United had accepted a £5.5 million bid from Tottenham, but Solskjaer showed his loyalty and said he wanted to stay at Old Trafford.

With the arrival of Dwight Yorke at Old Trafford, Solskjaer will be finding it difficult to get a game, never mind get in the starting lineup. Players who are favorites in front of him include, Andy Cole, Paul Scholes, Teddy Sheringham, and Dwight Yorke. But Solskjaer wants to prove himself at Old Trafford and I say to him good luck, and thanks for staying at Old Trafford.

THE MUNICH TESTIMONIAL

Eric Cantona bowed out of Manchester united in style at the Munich testimonial game. The final score ended up Manchester United XI 8 - Eric Cantona's international XI 4. The game was played in front of a packed Old Trafford, which was full with 55,000 United fans.

Cantona played the first halve with his own team that consisted with players such as Mark Hughes, Bryan Robson, Jean-Pierre Papin, and Gazza. The moment that every one had come to see was in the 80th minute, Eric Cantona scoring in a United shirt for the last time.

At the end of the game Cantona jogged round the outside of the pitch saying goodbye for his five great years at Old Trafford. He also got on the microphone and said the reason he quit was that he lost the passion for the game after playing it for 10 years, the best five of those years at Old Trafford.

The game raised just over £1 million for the family of the bereaved. It was 40 years since the Munich air crash and the game was played in a great manner for such great and talented players who died that day in Munich.

BECKS SIGNS

David Beckham has ended all speculation that he may leave the club to go to Italy by signing a new 5-year contract worth around £7 million with Manchester United.

This is a big boost for Man United as Beckham is one of the most influential players at the club and he is obviously one of England's best assets .

M.U.T.V

Sky has launched M.U.T.V. The channel will be dedicated to Manchester United, showing for 6 hours a day, 7 days a week. It will however cost £4.99 a month.

It is the first station dedicating itself to a single team, which is opened on the 10th September. Uniteds games won't be shown live on the station, which is a disappointment but it has made a deal with other United teams so that YOU can watch Uniteds youth team or reserves in action.

A typical days viewing will include, the days news, meeting the players, interviews with the players and manager, MUFC Superstore (Like a shopping channel but for all United essentials), and a live game.

BLOMQVIST IS OUR MAN!!

Alex Ferguson has got the signature of signing midfielder Jesper Blomqvist. The Parma player has agreed terms with United and Parma have let him go for a fee of what is believed to be around £4.4million. The signing will be very good for the Old Trafford side as United need to strengthen their number of midfielders. The transfer of a very good left-footed midfielder will keep everyone at the club on their toes and is an ideal replacement for whenever Ryan Giggs is injured.

Alex Ferguson has said that Jesper will be a first team player at Old Trafford with Ryan Giggs playing in the middle of the field. Whatever happens it looks sure to be an exciting season. Lets welcome the new number 15 to the club!!

Blomqvist has said he didn't want to leave the Italian club and that it was the pressure made on the Swede by Parma that made his mind up. But he now is looking forward to a long successful career at Old Trafford.
