Roy Keane

PLACE OF BIRTH: Cork

HEIGHT: 5'10"

WEIGHT: 11st3lb

Roy, like other Manchester united players, could have made it in a different sport. Boxing, there is talk that he was good at it but who can question him for taking up football.

The hard man of the Manchester United midfield was bought from Nottingham Forest for a record £3.75 million, in summer 93. That was a huge profit for Nottingham forest who paid only £25,000 to Cobh Ramblers for the youngster.

Alex Ferguson saw him as a replacement for Bryan Robson, and Keano has took his place in the side and looks very good. But when he was first bought, in the pre-season, people were questioning his weight, and that he looks very unfit, but as the season started and progressed, the fans new that Alex had made yet again another GREAT buy. His Manchester United career started with a big game against Liverpool, and from then on he has never stopped running and tackling, and his determination has never dropped until the present day.

Today he is an established international who has captained his Country, the Republic of Ireland, and this season he has captained Manchester United, when he hasn't been out injured.

In the 94/95 season, Keano proved himself as a defender as well as a midfielder. He played lots of games at the right back position, in place of the injured, Paul Parker. Even when United hadn't got enough fit defenders, he proved that he was a very good centre half.

He was part of a great duo, alongside Paul Ince, and now he is sure going to make a great partnership with youngster Nicky Butt. With that duo not many teams will outwit, outplay and have more fighting spirit than these two, and when Keane is fully fit its great to watch them play alongside each other. It looks as though they will never stop running, and Alex Ferguson once said, Roy is the engine in our team, if he stops we have a little problem.

He has had a poor 97/98 season due to injury but in the 98/99 season I'm sure he will wear the captains armband with pride, and help bring another title to Old Trafford.
