| Welcome
to this issue of Pain Tolerance. I usually do one column per week on Monday’s,
but with all the new stuff going on, more shows, more internet rumors and
backstage politics, I’ll be now writing my guaranteed column Mondays, and
if I feel there is enough to talk about for a second column per week, I’ll
do just that. Today’s column includes, my thoughts the latest WCW, WWF
raid of talent and backstage management. And then a review of this week’s
past shows, RAW/Nitro, and ECW on TNN thoughts.
Unbelievable
is the word right now. How can WWF not lock up their writing and backstage
staff? They just lost their WWF and RAW magazine editor Bill Banks, I’m
not exactly sure what Bruce Mitchell’s position is, but I have heard some
rumors he has resigned as well, to go to WCW like Banks. Then the shocker
of the week. Jeff Jarrett does not resign with the WWF. How unbelievably
dumb. How can he even think he is going to get a chance in WCW again? He
has failed before and will fail again? Look what happened with him last
time. He got all caught up in a feud with Steve McMichael, over Debra.
After getting Debra, and turning heel, he basically jobbed his way out
of WCW, since he couldn’t catch a break. What amazes me is, Vince Russo
has tried for the past two years to get Jarrett over, and only accomplished
that with the "puppies" by his side, then he lost his meal ticket, and
turned totally heel, beating on women. Only time he has actually lit a
crowd on fire. That was WWF television, a lot of bending the rules, stepping
across the line in the WWF, but what will Vince Russo be able to do with
him on WCW television? Just for the record, anybody notice if a wrestler
swears on WCW television, you read a post on the internet after saying
he’s in hot water, or WCW has been asked to tone it’s product down, yet
nearly every Hogan interview involves him repeatedly saying he’s going
to kick *insert name*’s ass? Like a broken record. Nothing is said after
words. What will Jarrett do when he is not allowed to curse, or use cheap
hit by beating on woman, or actually I doubt he’ll even get mic time. What
will Russo do? Bring back the good ol’ country singing superstar? That’s
J-E-Double F, J-A-Double R-E-Double T. The greatest singer, the greatest
wrestler, and the greatest performer in the whole….world. I just don’t
see Jarrett’s logic behind going ahead and signing with WCW. The reason
supposedly of leaving the WWF, is he is upset at the refusal of Steve Austin,
to wrestle him a few months back. Is that really worth, a high mid card
spot, the next thing to Main event, and a developed persona? I guess so,
in Jarrett’s eyes. It’ll be interesting to see what WCW does with him.
Maybe he can join up with the Red Necks and sing duets with Curt Hennig?
Another scary thing about all this is. In today’s ROSS REPORT, Jim Ross
reported, Mideon has signed a one year deal with the WWF. So, they can
lock up a low-card jobber, but not a next to main event heel? Heels, something
the WWF is really lacking. Seems the only legit heel is Triple H, who I
think is doing awesome job as the top heel in the federation. But, when
was the last time you saw a heel, get squashed so badly by the face, in
this case Austin. Seems they’re afraid to even let Triple H crack a smile
over Austin. Is the WWF that afraid of Austin’s face pop going down the
toilet?
I finally
got to catch RAW and Nitro for the first time in a long time. Here in Canada,
TSN has been busy airing the Major League Baseball play off’s, which is
all fine and good, but when you have 162 games from every team, on multiple
channels, and there is only one RAW per week, and only four RAW’s and Nitro’s
a month, you’d think they could make an effort to air them at the time
designated for them in the past years. Anyway, I really do not know where
WCW is going with the Revolution. The gimmick is useless with out Benoit
and Malenko. Saturn and Douglas are just not enough to carry this group.
The whole show was basically built around this group, and it really bombed.
The main event was no stellar either. Good team of Benoit and Hart, but
bad opponents for this duo to work against. Would have been if it was something
like Benoit/Hart Vs. DDP/Kanyon.
RAW
was WAR just turned into the WWF Animal Hospital. They really never explained
why the Bull Dogs where out back. If they did, I missed it. They couldn’t
have been the Rock’s since he hadn’t shown up, and dogs were shown before
hand. When the Rock, rockbottomed Bull Dog into the crap, I was in shock.
I could not believe the WWF would go that far. That was totally sick. But
in the same though, totally insane and hilarious. One quote that has came
back to be the truth, and has actually happened is Bret Hart’s quote from
his column a few weeks back about the Bull Dog’s wrestling return. A dog
rolling around in it’s own "crap", in a better word. I wonder what Bull
Dog’s thoughts where when he first heard, he was going to be basically
dropped a platter of crap, and then humiliated.
Now
on, TNN tonight we saw finally saw the return of Chris Candido. This was
my first chance, at seeing a Candido match, other than his stints in WWF
as Skip. I have seen clips of him, but not an actual complete match. Although
this match wasn’t top quality, it was still a great showing by both guys
involved. For some reason, I can sit through most WCW matches, if it’s
there’s a wrestler I enjoy or at least interests me some bit, I can watch
nearly all WWF matches, except for when I see a match at a pay-per-view,
and then the next night they have a rematch, and the match on RAW, is just
a sloppy performance of the two wrestlers involved. But with ECW wrestling
matches, I am glued to the tv watching, I don’t know if it’s because I’m
still getting into the ECW atmosphere, or if it’s because the performers
are just that good. I guess I will find out in late December when I have
had the chance to watch ECW for a good four to five months. Then I’ll see
if it’s just the new atmosphere or if it’s legitimately the workers. I’ll
admit, some of the stuff they do, is simply astonishing. Like the Awesome
bomb through a table to the outside. Or seeing a 6’6 leap over the top
and crash down to the floor. Or hard swinging chair shots. Hard as can
be cane shots and more.
Thanks
for reading today’s issue. I’ll be back this coming Monday with more happenings
in the wrestling world to talk about, plus a review of Heat and the pay-per-view,
WWF No Mercy. |
