| Super
Brawl most people would say the pay-per-view sucked. Compared to the recent
pay-per-views by WWF and ECW it did however for the limited talent WCW
has right now they actually put on a decent show. A full review is later
on in the column.
Welcome
to another edition of Pain Tolerance. Tonight’s column will include thoughts
on WCW Super Brawl, even more releases may be coming soon for WCW, the
rumors of Sabu and others coming to WCW and the revived Lightweight Division
in WWF.
WCW
Super Brawl the second of the twelve "classics" from WCW. Actually now
they are more like nightmares for fans. Going into this pay-per-view I
didn’t expect much, I didn’t get much from it but at least it was semi-entertaining.
The pay-per-view started with Jarrett stating the Harris Brothers where
now able to be at ringside during his match. Really what was the point
of this? Why did Nash ban them to begin with. Truly a waste of air time.
Lash
LeRoux vs. TAFKA Prince Iaukea with Paisley - It seems in WCW, Cruiserweight
is another term for opening match. Both of these men can go in the ring,
pretty entertaining match. The beauty of the TAFKA Prince Iaukea gimmick
is he doesn’t need to be able that charismatic, all he has to do is stay
in character. With the Artist as the new Cruiserweight champion, what can
we expect from this division?
Bam
Bam Bigelow vs. Brian Knobs - I don’t know why they took the title of Bigelow.
He was much more appealing then Brian Knobbs. I can sit through a Bam Bam
math but I just can’t stand Knobs. Don’t mistaken that for him being a
good heel, it’s just that he’s a piece of trash that has yet to be dumped.
Stupid ending. They build this match up as Knobs wanting the victory by
earning it, meanwhile it was Finlay that did most of the damage.
Screamin'
Norman Smiley vs. 3 Count - This math was one of few I was looking forward
to. The bit where two members of 3 Count were dancing and Norman joined
in was hilarious. This was probably the best way they could of worked the
match. Let Norman get the advantage but eventually be taken down by the
odds. One thing though didn’t Norman injure his knee on Thunder? On the
preview clips the made a big deal of him pointing to his injured knee when
he went through the table courtesy of the Wall, meanwhile he has taped
ribs at the pay-per-view? Odd.
The
Demon vs. The Wall - Pretty funny how WCW pointed out this was a "SPECIAL"
Main event match. We all know why however as it’s just a away to fulfill
the Demon’s contract with KISS. Dale Torberg, I believe the name of the
guy playing Demon has to be a fairly dedicated man. For him to know his
character has no room for growth and for him to still go out and give reasonable
effort in his matches deserves credit. Near the end of the match the Wall
got flipped off the top turnbuckle, and clearly it was his own stupidity
that he nearly landed full blast on his head. The moron didn’t let go of
Demon.
Tank
Abbott vs. Big Al - Decent match up. These guys slugged it out for a while.
Didn’t look to organized. For WCW to call themselves a family show is a
load of sh*t. Those two were calling each other every curse word known
to man. They totally screwed up when Big Al had Abbott down. What was he
trying to do? He dragged him to the corner and looked to be strapping Abbott’s
legs with his belt, then it looked as though he was going to pull Abbott’s
crotch into the post, then he climbed in the ring and just walked around
until he stood on the bottom rope and FINALLY stood on Abbott’s face. Nearly
two minutes time went by and only one offensive move was done.
Booker
vs. Big T with Stevie Ray and J. Biggs - I was surprised. This was actually
a decent match. Booker is really one of those talents that should be on
top of the promotion. Speaking of Booker T. In Saturday’s column, I asked
for your two choices to wrestle in a main event for WCW for the title.
Right now Booker is basically the most chosen wrestler. Second place goes
to Kidman and Vampiro who have been chosen both to wrestle Booker and even
wrestle each other. The feedback has been great so far, but I’m going to
continue this poll until my next column. Probably Thursday. So if you haven’t
voted yet, VOTE! The question is, if you were booking WCW, who would you
choose as two competitors to wrestle for the Heavyweight title. Please
remember that the wrestlers have to be on the CURRENT ACTIVE roster. A
few people chose Goldberg, yet he’s out right now. Only wrestlers that
are able to compete. Send your choices to [email protected]
Billy
Kidman with Torrie Wilson vs. Vampiro - One of the matches I was looking
forward, really only average. The problem with these type of matches is
WCW presents these FREE weeks before the pay-per-view. Can I buy a clue?
The reason for pay-per-view is to conclude a feud and start a new one!
Also why is WCW so fascinated with series matches? A series is great and
all. I’m not complaining about seeing a Kidman/Vampiro match but for some
reason I don’t see either wrestler going anywhere! Hogan claims the young
wrestlers can’t draw. When did he figure this out? Did he just clue in?
The reason though is not because the suck like he claims. No, it’s because
an egotistical old man like himself doesn’t know when to get the hell out.
The
Mamalukes with Disco Inferno vs. David Flair and Crowbar with Daffney -
A Sicilian Stretcher Match? Okay a new type of match. Sounds interesting,
except the rules of the match are totally stupid. Why was the referee’s
pulling Flair and Crowbar away? Shouldn’t the actual competitors do that?
Stupid. Also why were the Mamalukes taping them down to the stretches,
did they not see the clips on it? Their tape jobs were to be desired as
well. Mark Madden as a commentator is good, but I prefer Heenan. More specifically
I prefer a Hudson/Heenan team. Madden seems to JUST be about one liners.
That’s great, but for three straight hours it gets annoying. This type
of match could be great in the future, but before they do another one how
bout working the rules out a little better. The fans love spontaneous action.
That’s what made the first ladder math between Scott Hall and Shawn Michaels
at Wrestlemania X so good. The fans were sitting on the edge of their seats
at the action. The fans may not have been as enthusiastic about this match
but they were cheering on the Pysho Trio. Also why is Daffney just sitting
in the corner screaming? She pulled off one hell of a good hurcanrana.
*Somebody’s been training*
"Nature
Boy" Ric Flair vs. Terry Funk - Nothing much out of this match. It was
"decent" at best.
Hulk
Hogan vs. The Total Package with Elizabeth - If you didn’t know Hogan was
going to win, then you sign up for a life long pass to a mental institution.
The Package has been on a tear as of late and it would have really furthered
his character to get the go ahead over the "Almighty God of Wrestling,
in his own belief and of Big Al’s", Hulk Hogan. Big Al, a fellow columnist
of LordsofPain and I had a pretty thorough discussion on Hulk Hogan. We
didn’t get anywhere in the discussion. I admit Hogan played a big fact
in the creation of wrestling in the last twenty years nearly. However,
the last three we could of certainly done without. Hulk Hogan would be
a great spokesperson for WCW if he actually looked out for the company.
He is very good at getting his points across and he’s fairly honest. Just
he needs to lose the ego and the belief that he is the SOULD reason that
wrestling is so popular right now.
Sid
Vicious vs. Jeff Jarrett vs. Scott Hall - Have you ever watched a match
and after not remembered much about it? That’s how I feel about this match.
It didn’t leave a mark on me. All I remember is the match going through
about four referees, Piper coming out, a Sid choke slam on Jarrett and
then a power bomb on Hall. It’ll be interesting to see if Scott Hall is
released, out with an injury or is on Nitro tonight.
Kanyon
was denied his release. Scott Stiener may be forced out of his contract.
Flair resigned. What is going on in the world of WCW? Kanyon was on the
LAW this past Saturday night and n one of the most brutally honest interviews
I have ever heard, I would give him his release. The guy sounds so depressed
it’s not funny. He said he’d even go back to being a physical therapist
if couldn’t get a job elsewhere. I highly doubt the WWF would pass on him.
He may not be the absolute best on the mic, but he still is a great speaker
and his ring abilities and techniques are impeccable. Scott Stiener is
another guy that would be great in the WWF. I could really see him as WWF
champion in the near future if he went to them. He just looks so impressive
and for a guy his size he’s great in the ring as well. I’d love to see
a match between him and Chris Benoit or Stiener Vs. The Rock, or even Austin
if he does return. Ric Flair, for someone that complained for nearly the
past six years, and seeing what they’ve done to him and his former stable
the Horsemen, why would he stick around? I just don’t see the logic. Except
for the cash. I guess that’s a good reason to stick around.
With
the rumors of Sabu, Chris Candido and Tamy Sytch coming to WCW those three
can only help. There’s no possible way they could bring the federation
down anymore. A guy like Sabu would be useful to WCW, the only question
is will they push him correctly? I don’t see a Bobby Heenan/Sabu mix. They
just don’t seem compatible as a team. James Vanderburg would have been
great, but for some reason they released him. I wonder why. Seems WCW always
misses the boat on talents. Candido and Sytch would really help the company
out. Chris Candido is a straight forward worker, while Tammy supplies the
"enthusiasm". Also the girls WCW has right now are all fairly young. So
she would certainly help out in that problem, with tutoring the girls so
to speak on giving purpose and goals to their characters.
The
revived WWF Lightweight division has been great so far. Last night on Sunday
Night Heat Essa Rios, I believe that’s his name put on another great match
with Funaki of Kai-En-Tai. Lita looks a lot better now then she did as
Ms. Congeniality of ECW. The only problem with this is, so far we haven’t
seen anyone new. We’ve seen the same guys. Julio Fantastico who has been
on WWF Jakked quite a bit would be a great contender for the title. With
all these wrestlers getting out of their contracts in WCW, it’s surprising
no cruiser weight has. I doubt Juvi would even try, since I don’t see him
being welcomed open armed by the WWF, with his impressions of the Rock.
Psycosis would be great, so would any of 3 Count.
Just
to remind you all again. The poll I started in Saturday’s column will continue
to Thursday night’s column. The next installment of Pain Tolerance. Get
your votes in. The question is: Who would you have booked to wrestle for
the WCW heavyweight title. Two competitors. The top 5 most chosen matches
will appear, and I’ll even forward it to WCW.com. Maybe it open their eyes
a bit. You never know.
Thanks
for reading tonight. Enjoy RAW and Nitro. I’ll be back again Thursday night
with another column. |
