  • Victoria's reign: 1837-1901
     
  • Victorian literature: 1830-1870
     
  • Victorian houses lavishly furnished; overdecorated by today's standards
     
  • Structured, proper society
     
  • Rules and regulations for behavior, dating, social interaction were very strict
     
  • Patriarchal households
     
  • Emphasis on family
     
  • Lot of emphasis on what was proper and what was not
     
  • Poor - uneducated, lack of reading and/or writing skills
     
  • Emergence of the middle class
     
  • Prudish to any reference to sexuality
     
  • Inventions - railroad, electricity and running water (latter part of the 19th century, telegraph
