  • Ulysses - character analysis
     
  • Tithonus - natural flow of life
       
      The Lady of Shalott
     
  • Exists partially for beauty (sound, imagery)
     
  • Cannot look directly at life; can only look on life through her mirror
     
  • Exploration of artistic endeavors
     
  • Parts I and II - gently beautiful
     
  • Part III - change in tone to exemplify the appearance of Sir Lancelot
     
  • Matches the flow and sound of the poetry with the actions ongoing in the poem
       
      Ulysses
     
  • Dramatic monologue - 3 characteristics:
    1. One person speaking throughout the poem
    2. An audience to whom the dialogue is addressed
    3. Pinpoint location
     
  • Ulysses bored with Ithaca
     
  • Lines 1-5: Arrogance
     
  • Passive in regard to his kingdom; wishes to leave
     
  • Lines 22-23: Desire to push forward
     
  • Lines 33-43: Feels his son is too weak to follow him; too compassionate for his tastes; NOT A WARRIOR
     
  • Lines 67-70
       
      Tithonus
     
  • Gains immortality, but continues to age
     
  • Lines 1-6: Separation from the normal cycle of life
