Class Notes for March 8th, 2001

      Dickens's Other Novels

  • Martin Chuzzlewit: Beginning of a series of 5 (Martin Chuzzlewit, Bleak House, Dombey & Son, Little Dorrit, and Our Mutual Friend) centering on social criticism; villains grow out of society

  • Dombey & Son: Rather strong novel

  • David Copperfield: Not as complicated as Bleak House or Our Mutual Friend; semi-autobiographical; 1st-person narrative

  • Hard Times: Atypical Dickens novel - nonintricate plot, few characters, no comic characters, shorter than normal Dickens novel; attack on Utilitarianism and Industrialization

  • Little Dorrit: One of Dickens's best novels; one drawback is main character (Amy Dorrit) - flawless

  • The Mystery of Edwin Drood: Unfinished - Dickens died one-third of the way through; typical murder mystery novel - uncharacteristic Dickens novel

      Bleak House

  • March 1852 - September 1853

  • Jarndyce case - based on actual case

  • Two different narrations: 3rd-person and 1st-person

  • Omniscient narrator tends to set the mood - very descriptive

  • Esther's narration keeps plot moving - introduces characters
