HAPPINESS IS A HABIT

Happiness is a habit - a by-product of right thinking and living.

1. Live a simple life. Be temperate in your habits. Avoid self-seeking and
selfishness. Make simplicity the keynote of your daily plans. Simple things
are the best.

2. Spend less than you earn. It may be difficult, but it pays large dividends
in contentment. Keep out of debt. Cultivate frugality, prudence, and
self-denial. Avoid extravagance.

3. Think constructively. Train yourself to think clearly and accurately. Store
your mind with useful thoughts. Stand porter at the door of your  mind.

4. Cultivate a yielding position. Resist the common tendency to want your way.
See others' viewpoint.

5. Be grateful. Begin the day with gratitude for your opportunities. Be glad
for the privilege of life and work.

6. Rule your moods. Cultivate a mental attitude of peace and goodwill.

7. Give generously. There is no greater joy in life than to render happiness to
others by means of intelligent giving.

8. Work with right motives. The highest purpose of your life should be to grow
in spiritual grace and power.

9. Be interested in others. Divert your mind from self-centeredness. In the
degree that you give, serve and help, you will experience the by-products of
happiness.

10. Live in a day-tight compartment. That is, live one day at a time.
Concentrate on your
immediate task.  Make the most of today.

11. Have a hobby. Nature study, walking, gardening, music, carpentry, stamp
collecting, sketching, voice culture, public speaking, language, chess, books,
photography, social service, travel, authorship. Cultivate an avocation to
which you can turn for diversion and relaxation.

12. Keep close to GOD.

HABIT 1:  BE PROACTIVE
Are my actions based upon self-chosen values or upon my moods, feelings, and
circumstances?

HABIT 2:  BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
Have I written a personal mission statement which provides meaning, purpose,
and direction to my life?  Do my actions flow from my mission?

HABIT 3:  PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST
Am I able to say no to the unimportant, no matter how urgent, and yes to the
important?

HABIT 4:  THINK WIN-WIN
Do I seek mutual benefit in all interdependent relationships?

HABIT 5:  SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD
Do I avoid autobiographical responses and instead faithfully reflect my
understanding of the other person before seeking to be understood?

HABIT 6:  SYNERGIZE
Do I value different opinions, viewpoints, and perspectives of others when
seeking solutions?

HABIT 7:  SHARPEN THE SAW
Am I engaged in continuous improvement in the physical, mental, spiritual,
and social-emotional dimensions of my life?

                        CRITICAL THINKING
                        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
o  Close examination of a proposed problem's or issue's solution to
   determine its strengths and its weaknesses.
   ->  Role of Criticism
          1. refine solution (Ex. gems)
          2. easily persuade others of its worth
o  Focus on your ideas.
   ->  Vulnerability to variety of errors.
   ->  "It's mine so it must be good." (Ex. dog with his bone)
   ->  Familiarity makes it difficult to see flaw.
o  Overcome obstacles.
   ->  Disregard defensive reaction and force self to examine it critically.
   ->  Turn your ego to advantage.
o  Apply curiosity.
   ->  Examine from different perspective.
   ->  "How will my solution work when it is applied?"
   ->  "How will others react to it?"
o  Avoid assumptions.
   ->  Assumptions obstruct the refining process.
   ->  Misguiding assumptions:
       =>  others' familiarity with the problem
       =>  small imperfections will not affect other people's acceptance
       =>  clear to you, clear to others
       =>  automatic acceptance
o  Refine your solutions.
   ->  make your best ideas even better, more effective, workable and attractive
   ->  AIM: Improve your solutions.
   ->  4 questions to answer:
           1. How exactly will your solutions be applied?
           2. What difficulties could arise in application and how would
              these best be overcome?
           3. What reasons might others find for resisting the solution?
              What modifications could you make to overcome their resistance?
           4. Who, specifically, will have to be persuaded of the value of
              your solutions?  What kind of presentation would be most likely
              to persuade them?
                               HOW TO WORK
                               ~~~~~~~~~~~

1.  WORK with HUMILITY.
    James 4:10 -> Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall
    lift you up.

    a)  Remember that you are just a sinner.
        Romans 3:23 -> For all have sinned, and come short of the glory
        of God.
        Romans 6:23 -> For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God
        is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    b)  Remember that Christ saved you.
        John 3:16 -> For God so loved the world, that he gave his only
        begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
        but have everlasting life.

    c)  Remember that Christ became a servant to you.
        Philippians 2:5-8 -> Let this mind be in you, which was also in
        Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not
        robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation,
        and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the
        likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled
        himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

    d)  Be subject unto higher powers.
        I Peter 2:18-19 -> Servants, be subject to your masters with all
        fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
        For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure
        grief, suffering wrongfully.

2.  WORK with LOVE.
    Romans 12:9-11 -> Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which
    is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to
    another; not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.

    a) It will help you do your best.
       Colossians 3:17 -> And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in
       the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by
       him.

    b) You will become effective.
       Philippians 4:13 -> I can do all things through Christ which
       strengtheneth me.

3.  WORK with UNITY.
    Romans 12:4-5 -> For as we have many members in one body, and all
    members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in
    Christ, and every one members one of another.

    a) We must have one goal.
       Philippians 2:2-4 -> Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having
       the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done
       through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of the mind let each
       esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own
       things, but every man also on the things of others.

    b) We must please God, not men.
       Galatians 1:10 -> For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek
       to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant
       of Christ.

    c) We must work for edifying.
       Ephesians 4:12 -> For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of
       the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.

    d) We should not be complacent.
       John 9:4 -> I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is
       day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

    e) We should not stop there. Set another goal upon reaching one and lead a
       victorious life.
       Galatians 6:9 -> And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due
       season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Remember :      Every work for Jesus will be blest
                But he asks from everyone his best.
                Our talents may be few,
                These may be small.
                But unto him is due our best,
                Our all.

Happy working !!!

*Thoughts To Live The Days By*

The following is a collection of some nice thoughts worth pondering over
each day. Check these out for they may provide some source of guidance or
direction in your life. These you will probably find more practical,
applicable, and "down-to-earth" unlike horoscopes which only attempt to
forecast your future.

*Having Peace Of Mind*
A man once prayed, "Grant me the gift of the untroubled mind." In our
thoughtful moments we all yearn for this gift. We long to live every day
without worries, anxieties, doubts or fears. We long to associate with our
friends without suspicion or hatred, in the true spirit of fellowship. In
a word, we long to possess peace of mind.

*Our Choice Of Words*
"A careless word may kindle strife; a cruel word may wreck my life; a
bitter word may hate instill; a brutal word may smite and kill; a gracious
word may smooth the way; a joyous word may light the way; a timely word
may lessen the stress; a loving word may heal and bless." We do well to be
careful in our choice of words.

*Make Each Day A Happy One*
Abraham Lincoln said a man is about as happy as he makes up his mind to be.
Let us be happy each day, unburdened by the mistakes of yesterday or the
forebodings of the future. Let us be kind, be cheerful, find no fault and
live our best today. Let us find a little time each day to be quiet, to
relax and to pray.

*Things To Be Glad About*
Spend 10 minutes every morning reminding yourself of all the things you
ought to be glad about. Shut out every other thought. At first you may not
be able to think of many things, especially if you wake up with a grouchy
feeling. But after a little practice, you will be surprised to find there
are hundreds of things to be glad about.

*Making Life Worthwhile*
A person jumped from a building leaving a note that said, "I've seen all
I want of life. Life holds nothing for me.  My life isn't worth living."
If we do not find life worth living, it is our own fault." It is not
what life brings to us but what we bring to  life that  determines the
worthwhileness of life.

*Be Forgiving Of Others*
George Herbert wrote, "He who cannot forgive breaks the bridge  over
which he himself must pass." Yet there are people who refuse to forgive
or "bury the hatchet." They prefer to cherish a resentment or grudge in
their hearts and wait to get even. Life is like a boomerang. We cannot
expect mercy from God if we are unforgiving to others.

*Skeletons In Our Closets*
Many people keep their burdens, dissapointments and secret sorrows to
themselves. there is a skeleton in nearly every closet. Even people who
seem to be happy have unknown frustrations. We must never forget this
annonymous tragedy in the world. It will greatly soften and modify our
judgments of our fellowmen. It will make us kind and merciful to others.

*Disappointments And Failures*
We cannot expect all our plans to go through without a hitch. We are
bound to have disappointments. We are sure to have failures. We must
learn to take our disappointments and failures philosophically. We must
learn to smile when things go wrong, to look for the brighter side of
life, and to keep on trying until we succeed.

*The Sea Of Life*
The sea of life is not always calm. The real test comes when the storms
rage, the waves lash and the strong winds blow. The real test comes when
life brings us bleak and bitter experiences, the heart-breaking failures,
the sad disappointments, the crushing sorrows, the sleepless nights, the
blinding tears. When such storms come we must ask God to give us courage
and stamina to continue our journey through life.

*Saying I'm Sorry*
The three magic words that can restore broken human relationships are "I
am sorry." No dispute can be settled if each side insists on putting the
entire blame on the other. When one side says, "The fault was mine; I am
sorry," the other side is bound to say, "I was at fault, too." It takes a
lot of courage to admit one's fault. Let us learn to say the three magic
words.

*We All Have To Suffer*
We sometimes indulge in self-pity by thinking that disappointments, fai-
lures, heartaches and  tragedies are peculiar to us.  But they are the
common lot of us all. We are not singled out for an undue share of life's
woes. Suffering is a principle of life itself, as long as we live in this
world we all have to suffer.

*Get Out Of Yourself*
Many people are miserable because they are shut up as prisoners in the
solitary confinement of their cells. Their interest and attention are
focused on themselves. The woes and sorrows of others are not  their
concern. They see nothing but their own troubles. To live happily, we
must get out of ourselves and into the lives of others.

*You Cannot Always Win*
In life you cannot always win. You are bound to meet defeat at times.
Nothing so tests a man as what he does when he is defeated. It is in
defeat that one's quality of mind and soul is revealed.  It is not
shameful to be defeated, but it is terrible to surrender to it. Learn
a lesson from your failure and fight on.

*Being Alone Without Being Lonely*
Many people try to run away from their inner loneliness. They do not
know how to be alone. They do anything to escape being alone. They are
always on the go; they are always doing something. To live meaningfully,
we must master one of the fine arts of life - learning to be alone with-
out being lonely. We must learn to live with ourselves.

*Carrying A Double Load*
In life there are two sets of facts - one we can control, the other
beyond our control. If we do not draw a distinction between the things
we are responsible for and things we are not, we pile on ourselves a
load too heavy to bear. Our business is to do our job the best we know
how and trust God for the rest. Why carry the double load?

*Money Is The Root Of All Evil*
Money can be either a blessing or a curse.  The Bible does not say,
"Money is the root of all evil," but it does say, "The love of money is
the root of all evil." Money in itself is neutral, and is neither good
nor bad. We make it good or bad by the way we use it. We must use it to
benefit not only ourselves, but our society.

*How to Live Longer*
How to live longer: Eat less, chew more. Worry less, work more. Hurry
less, read more. Smoke less, breathe more. Grumble less, praise  more.
Hate  less, love more.  Talk less, think more.  Ride less, walk more.
Waste less, give more. Preach less,practice more. Bray less, pray more.
Rush less, relax more.

*How To Work Well*
Many people are working under pressure. They  feel pressed  with  the
thought that they don't have enough time. As a consequence they do their
work in a careless, slipshod manner. It is better to take our attention
off the clock and the calendar and concentrate on the quality of work
done. We must learn to be thorough and efficient.

*Rest And Pull Yourself Together*
Do you sometimes say, "Today I am down in the dumps"? You mean you are
in a mood and that nothing goes  right and everything is a  source  of
annoyance. It may be you are physically tired or emotionally fatigued.
Why not rest a while? Why not ask God to give you strength to pull your
self together?

*Forgiveness Is Essential*
Forgiveness is essential to our health of mind and body. Friendships are
often marred or ruined by lack of forgiveness. Misunderstanding and ill-
feeling exist between people when a little frank talk and forgiveness
can mean peace and happiness. Family rifts exist for years when forgive-
ness could restore harmony and happy unity. To forgive is to live.

*How To Live Today*
Today let us live without the complaint that life has not given us every-
thing we wanted. Today let us try not to find fault with people. Today
let us live cheerfully  in spite of  the irritations and annoyances of
life. Today let us spend a few minutes thinking of God, by whose grace
we live. Today let us not worry about tomorrow. Today let us live our
best.

                               HOW TO WRITE GOOD

   Frank L. Visco
   Vice-president and Senior Copywriter at USAdvertising.

   My several years in the word game have learnt me several rules:
    1. Avoid alliteration. Always.
    2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
    3. Avoid cliches like the plague. (They're old hat.)
    4. Employ the vernacular.
    5. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
    6. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.
    7. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.
    8. Contractions aren't necessary.
    9. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.
   10. One should never generalize.
   11. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: ``I hate
       quotations. Tell me what you know.''
   12. Comparisons are as bad as cliches.
   13. Don't be redundant; don't more use words than necessary; it's
       highly superfluous.
   14. Profanity sucks.
   15. Be more or less specific.
   16. Understatement is always best.
   17. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.
   18. One-word sentences? Eliminate.
   19. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.
   20. The passive voice is to be avoided.
   21. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.
   22. Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.
   23. Who needs rhetorical questions?
