Why Vegan?

ANIMAL RIGHTS

All animal (including human) species share similar characteristics - such as the ability to experience pain, fear and hunger. Humankind practices speciesism - that is, discriminating against animals solely because they are not of the same species. Speciesism, like racism, is irrational and perpetuated by ignorance and subtle coercion. Humankind continues to permit the use of billions of animals for food (meat, fish, poultry, milk, eggs, honey and their derivatives), science (such as medical research; safety-testing drugs, toiletries and cosmetics, garden and household products etc; cloning, xenotransplantation), personal adornment (eg leather, wool, silk); and amusement (including pet-keeping, hunting and angling, horse and dog racing, aquaria, circuses, zoos and safari parks). Animals are nothing more than commodities - sacrificed and exploited in the name of profit, greed, 'progress' and 'entertainment'. Generations of vegans have shown that it is possible to live healthily without recourse to the tainted 'fruits' of animal use and abuse.

HEALTH

The human digestive system and dental structure, like that of other higher primates, is 'designed' for a diet based on plant foods. An essentially wholefood animal-free diet is low in cholesterol, high in fibre, high in vitamins and minerals, low in saturated fat, low in sodium and contains all human nutritional requirements. Meat, dairy products and eggs contain no dietary fibre, are the principal sources of saturated fat, and are responsible for most incidents of food poisoning.

"The movie 'Babe' is the way Americans want to think of pigs. Real life 'babes' see no sun in their limited lives, with no hay to lie on, no mud to roll in......"

- Morley Safer -

For every egg eaten, a hen must live in a battery cage for around 30 hours.
