"Teaching the 'Leave-it' Command"

Hold the treat in the middle of your fist. Turn your hand with fingers down toward the ground. Your puppy is going to be all over your hand trying to get the treat out of your hand. Wait, s/he will eventually get bored and start to do something else. When this happens, say "Good puppy" then open your hand and tell the puppy to "take it". That is automatic of course. Continue this for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Puppies have a short attention span so don't over- train. Continue these steps until your puppy is sure what "leave-it" means. Once that has happened, you can expand the command to mean anything the puppy puts his/her mouth on that you don't want him/her to chew on.
