Biographical Information

"You don't have to be a cowboy to be a good horseman,

but you'd better be a good horseman if you want to be a cowboy",

Jay Mele.

Jay Mele worked for seven years on a cattle ranch in northern Alberta, Canada, then spent a number of years conditioning horses for competitive trail riding. He became a professional horse trainer when his passion for working with horses took over his life, twenty-eight years ago. During those years, Jay has trained and worked with hundreds of horses, of all breeds and disciplines. On any given day, its not unusual to find Jay working a young Paint stud colt for the halter show ring, followed by a two year old Quarter Horse filly who is a prime candidate for the NRHA Futurity in Oklahoma City. Even if a horse isn't a cutting bred horse, part of his training includes exposure to a young cow and a workout on the outdoor track near the mechanical cow. These sound, sight and smell experiences for young and older horses alike, is part of his 'been there, done that' experience that helps a horse become a seasoned show master, trail horse or your best backyard buddy.

Jay has been breeding exceptional Paint and Quarter Horses over the years and has trained and shown a number that have become APHA (American Paint Horse Association) Champions and ROM event horses as well as PTHA (Pinto Horse of America Association), AQHA, NCHA, and NRHA show winners. Starting young horses the right way has propelled Jay into the show ring with his own horses as well as clients horses in all major events including halter, western pleasure, trail, games, bridle path hack, English pleasure, hunter under saddle, working cow horse, cutting and reining. Under his tutelage, Youths and Amateurs have gone on to become NEPHA (New England Paint Horse Association) Champions in all events. Jay's philosophy is that while a show record and titles and awards are important, when that career is over, you better end up with a happy and sound, good using horse. He believes that we are obligated to be responsible horsemen, and that being an equal partner with our animals should be our ultimate goal. We need to give our horses enough care and information to master the task that we are asking them to perform.

Jay not only trains horses but has taken an active role in helping to improve and preserve the rights of horses and horsemen alike. He has served as a Director of the Connecticut Horse Council, the Massachusetts Horse Council, the Massachusetts Quarter Horse Association and the New England Quarter Horse Association. He was President of the New England Paint Horse Club for ten years and was a National Director of the American Paint Horse Association. Jay is currently a Regional Representative of the Foundation Quarter Horse Registry and this past September attended the FQHR Judges Clinic in Grand Island, Nebraska and is now an approved judge for that organization. Jay was also recognized in 1984 by the Governor of Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis, for his contributions to the horse industry.

Although Jay has achieved and experienced a lot over the years, he's the first to admit that he'll never see it all. He attends many clinics and seminars given by his peers. Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance are his most valued mentors, and he has attended clinics given by Doug Milholland, Dick Pieper, Bob Loomis, Larry Rose, Richie Fisher, Buck Brannaman, John Lyons and other noted clinicians.

Over the years, Jay has put on many exceptionally well attended seminars and clinics throughout New England. His Horsemanship Seminars cover Ground Work and Grooming, Breaking and Riding, Training Aids and Bitting, Schooling and Showing, Trailering and Trail Riding. Problem horses are no strangers to Jay's training techniques and seminars. In his Training Aids and Bitting Seminar you learn the purpose of many training aids and why bits are made the way they are. He'll teach you to understand the proper use of these aids and the potential abuse that they can inflict on your best friend.

Jay's series of Clinics will teach you the basic foundation needed to prepare a horse for ground work, riding day one t o the finished riding horse. In his Advanced Clinics Jay moves the experienced rider into a specialized discipline; Reining, cutting, pleasure, halter and more. Jay, unlike many clinicians, understands the need to take you beyond the basics. In his experience working with horse owners, he found that MOST of them want to SHOW their horse. In his experience working with clinicians, MOST of them don't have a program to get from finished riding horse to the horse owners objective to SHOW their horse in a specialized discipline! Jay does. So how do you move from Foundation to Famous? Follow Jay's program.
